Interior designer cries over decorating mistake: ‘Avoid them like the plague’
Now that the weather is finally getting warmer, it’s tempting to bring some of that cheerful atmosphere into your home.
The right summer decorations can transform your living space into an oasis of calm, while the wrong choices can leave you feeling gloomy.
But before you spend any money, an interior designer warns you about a big mistake people make when decorating their homes for the summer: you should avoid all expenses.
Zara O’Hare, an interior designer at Land of carpetssaid: “The right colors can make our home a breath of fresh air, but it can also quickly go wrong.”
According to the professional, the biggest mistake people can make when decorating their home for summer is choosing dark colors.
“Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to interior design,” she said, “but dark colors are more suited to winter and should be avoided like the plague in summer decor.”
What’s the problem with dark shades?
These colours can feel quite heavy in the home, especially in the summer months. Lighter shades, on the other hand, create a light and airy atmosphere.
“For example, dark green can feel a bit Christmassy, while dark orange can feel a bit Halloweeny,” Zara explains. “You want to avoid those in the summer.”
“Use lighter, airier colours and fabrics that will create a fresh and bright atmosphere in your home,” Zara advises.
“And I’m not just talking about wall colors. Swap out heavy throws for lighter linens in the summer, and swap out accent pillows for softer, neutral colors like muted yellows, blues, and creams.”
“These shades feel summery because they are reminiscent of sunshine, clear skies, the ocean and the beach,” Zara explains.
Zara also warned against overusing one color scheme.
“If you go with cream walls, a cream sofa, cream chairs, a cream rug and a cream bedspread, it can look too neutral and boring,” she says.
“It’s important to add a few complementary shades to transform your space from drab to stylish.”
“For example, if your main color is cream, adding some green and gold accents can create a more luxurious look.”
Trends that interior designers hate
IF you want to make sure your home looks glamorous, these are the trends interior designers hate.
NO YELLOW: According to Bilal Rehman, yellow paint in the bedroom is absolutely a no-go.
He said, “If you want everyone to know you’re a horse girl, yellow is perfect for you.”
SIGN OUT: Kelly Hoppen shared her honest opinion about the Live, Love, Laugh signs.
The interior design professional explains: “Another complaint of mine – Live, Laugh, Love – those wooden things that are on bookshelves and floating shelves, that’s so 10, 12, 15 years ago.”
NO GREY YAY: Julie Provenzano explained that gray interiors are too common.
She stressed: “We took something good and exaggerated it to the point where it now feels copy, paste and boilerplate.”
