Tired from Netflix? Mubi showed me the films I missed and I thought it was great – this is what I found

I did the unthinkable last week: I paused my Netflix Subscription and decided to only view content from a smaller, less well -known streaming service called Mubi.
The results? I have watched many films that I would not normally find on one of the Best streaming services. From Arthouse and IndieVilms such as Pablo Larraín’s EMA, to the world cinema and restored classics such as Tarsem Singh’s The fallMany of the titles I have viewed are not available on a large scale for streaming elsewhere.
Although regular streaming services have played a valuable role in helping spreading more indie films, many in more recent years have had to tighten their wallets while they want to seduce more money into the large ticket productions of their studio. This means that indie films do not tend to form a large part of their libraries, giving Mubi the opportunity to meet a niche that neglects the popular streamers.
The Mubi catalog may have a lot less choice than that of Netflix, but this gives its original content (both homemade and acquired) even more exclusivity, because this is the only place to find certain films. What Mubi essentially offers is an entrance gate to some of the largest highlights of the film festivals, so if you are not to Cannes, Sundance, Berlinale or Venice Festivals this year, Mubi is your streaming portal.
Of course, not every movie from these festivals at Mubi streams. The costs for acquiring films depend on the scale of a production and the prestige of the studio behind it. But with Mubi who made his biggest acquisition ever on Cannes this year – it spent $ 24 million to Lynne Ramsay’s Festival Darling Die my dearest (shown above) – It is starting to become a feasible rival of streamers with deeper bags.
What I streamed during my MUBI subscription
If you are new to Mubi, there has never been a better time to go into an independent cinema. Indie studios such as A24 and Neon produce some of the most spoken releases of the Filmwereld-Die last year Oscar-winning hit Anora? Or what about part of the Best horror films of 2024 pretend I saw the TV glow And Long legs?
Mubi’s own distribution studio also makes waves in space. It in particular has the Worldwide streaming rights on the body horror of Coralie FargeeatFabric Last year, in addition to the real crime drama of Magnus von Horn The girl with the needle and the drama of Andrea Arnold’s Dreamscape Coming-of-Age drama Bird, What if you have not seen is an absolute must-watch.
Arnold is known for the casting of unknown actors next to established stars, and this formula works brilliantly for BirdDie Barry Keoghan sees (Salt burning) With the leading role In addition to newcomer Nykiya Adams.
Other highlights from his 2024 releases (which I have seen so far) are the Latvian indief film Currentdefeat Binnenstebuiten 2 And Moana 2 To win the best animation function at the Academy Awards, as well as Gia Coppolas The last Showgirl And Miguel Gomes’ Grand Tour.
I also succeeded in finding some older films that I had not seen in years, such as John Carpenter’s Escape from New York (If you have not met Kurt Russell’s Snake Plissken before, then you are very welcome)” Spike Lee’s Malcolm X, GREGG ARAKIs Mysterious and Guillermo del Toros Pan’s Labyrinth. I also ensured that I streamed this Nine films on Mubi with more than 90% on rotten tomatoes Recommended by TechRadar’s Rowan Davies.
What I am most enthusiastic about, however, is the New films And series that Mubi has taken over at this year’s festivals, and which still have to be released on the streaming service. From what I see online from those who attended the screenings, Cooper Raiff’s Hal & Harper, Alex Russell’s Silence and Oliver Laxe’s Sirât are among the most anticipated, with all three more than 90% reviews on rotten tomatoes based on early critic reviews.
What I liked about streaming films on Mubi
We once praised Mubi as the “antidote for streaming fatigue”And I fully agree with this for the way it takes a completely different approach to put together the library. Unlike the more popular streamers, Mubi chooses the films that show it, making it a lot easier to find something new to view.
I am sure many have made one of these Five mistakes when choosing what to view on Netflix (or a streaming service by the way); Whether it is about non-English titles or the assessment of a film of his folding art. But it is a lot harder to do this on a service such as Mubi, especially because it specializes in foreign films (it always includes the country where a film is made), and because of the incredible cover art it contains for each title.
It even has the spotlight part of a curator of featured films to decide what to view more easily, but it is worth mentioning that this varies per region due to distribution rights. In the US, for example, the editors of Mubi have chosen Lars von Trier Antichrist, Alonso Ruizpalacios’ La Cocina, Daisy von Scherler Mayer’s Party girl and Michael Almeryda’s Marjorie Prime, Only in the UK La Cocina is recommended from those four.
Mubi also has a wealth of little known content that makes finding something new to see fun and fresh. Half of the time I have never heard of the films I see in the catalog, which means that I constantly discover new underground hits that I wish I had known before. I couldn’t ask anything from a streaming service.
