- The three -mile island nuclear power plant seems to be on the planning and to open in 2027 (not 2028)
- Microsoft has a 20-year electricity purchase agreement on the site
- Other AI companies also invest in nuclear
The Three Mile Island nuclear power plant could restart as soon as 2027 – a year prior to the original reopening date of 2028 – but with an important difference in comparison with its former life.
Only unit 1 will be restarted because it was not involved in the Meltdown of 1979, which had influenced unity 2. Although unit 1 remained open after the incident, it was closed in 2019 for economic reasons (no worries about safety).
This time it is set to be managed by MicrosoftAfter the company’s deal on a 20-year-old Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), signed in September 2024, in combination with Constellation Energy.
Microsoft revives the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant
Microsoft is specifically interested in this nuclear power plant because of the rising energy consumption and the rising requirements caused by its powerful AI data centers. As a result, Redmond and other hyperscalers, including Meta, AWS and Oracle, have all invested heavily in nuclear energy to meet demand.
For example, Meta recently signed a similar 20-year-old deal for the Clinton-Nuclear factory of Illinois and AWS invested $ 650 million in Datacentra in nuclear driven near the Susquehanna factory in Pennsylvania.
Water systems have now been restored to the site and infrastructure inspections, according to Reuters Reporting. The site is now waiting for the approval of the grid connection of the regional grid operator, where the nuclear regulating committee will inspect the site as quickly as next month.
More generally, Microsoft’s decision to reopen a closed nuclear site is the first of its kind and a reflection of the industrial breaking to produce more energy. Record -high American electricity demand also specifically causes an increase in nuclear power stations, thanks to their relatively high output.
Constellation CEO Joe Dominguez admitted: “We made a mistake when closing this factory, but we are not here to dwell on the past.” Looking ahead, since Microsoft and his major technical rivals are preparing to integrate AI into more aspects of work and personal life, it is clear that it should not only be done to generate sufficient electricity, but also to tackle the growing environmental problems.
