A new AI-driven learning assistant, Codio coach, claims to stimulate the student figures by 15% using a Socratic method inspired by a 2,400 year old approach.
Codio -Coach, launched in April 2024, was built using the Claude Garge Langual Model of Anthropic and was designed to guide students instead of giving direct answers.
The CODIO study, drawn from 1,800 students in 39 computer science courses between January 2023 and December 2024, shows that the median figures have risen by 15% and the average figures increased by 12% when Codio Coach was integrated into courses.
Codio claims that academic profit is rooted in old methods
The reported results are impressive, but the claims invite further, especially because AI continues to get the land in educational environments.
These figures are based on data from environments hosted by Codio, which raise questions about external validity and how these profits can generalize outside the platform.
The system simplifies summaries and error declarations in the ordinary language.
Fifty-six percent of the interactions were activated by the “explain this error” tool, which helps students understand the compiler or runtime problems, which suggests that support during error detection is particularly valuable.
“These findings are an important proof point that, when it is carefully designed and embedded in the learning experience, can stimulate real improvements in results,” said Philip Snalune, CEO and co-founder of Codio.
But although Snalune’s optimism is clear, the definition of “real improvements” deserves control in the context of controlled environments versus broader academic institutions.
Codio’s research shows that the use was highest in beginners and intermediate programming courses, where early frustrations often lead to failure.
This can explain the doubled completion rates, because error handling tools can help students keep them involved long enough to complete their courses.
However, critics can claim that serious dependence on AI, even for non-answered help, could create long-term dependency, especially if students are not learned how to solve problems without intervention.
