A former theme park can be converted into hundreds of houses 15 years after the site was closed and left to rot.

A planning application has been submitted to turn the former Camelot -Themapark in Charnock Richard, Lancashire into 350 houses.

The park closed in 2012 after almost 30 years and has since been empty, apart from incidental use for compelling Halloween Events and laser day.

Story Homes has submitted the application to turn the site into housing, proposed by 50 percent to be affordable homes for the locals, the Bolton News reported.

The houses would include a series of sizes for first buyers, families and older couples who want to shrink.

The plans also include a Community Hub Office and meeting rooms for community groups.

The plans say that the development would also be a boost for local wildlife with a profit of ten percent biodiversity, because of the restoration of the natural water flow of nearby Syd Brook.

Siobhan Sweney, North West Land Manager for Story Homes, said: ‘We are pleased to raise plans for this important development on a well -known local site.

‘Our proposal not only goes to the strong demand for high -quality, affordable houses in Chorley, but also emphasizes sustainability and community investments.

“Through the delivery of affordable houses, investments in green infrastructure and the creation of new community spaces, we are dedicated to ensure that this schedule supports the local population and improves the wider area.”

During the peak of his popularity, Camelot was one of the most prominent tourist attractions of the northwest, with a series of offers such as the entertainment Ride Excalibur 2, and the organization of live feeling in an arena.

Inspired by the legend of King Arthur, the fatal park was closed to the public for almost 30 years.

Owners Knights Leisure said that bad weather contributed to low visitor numbers – and so the decision was made to close the park, with more than 150 employees lost their jobs.

The amusement park was the home of the legendary Knightmare – of which the structure remained standing for a long time, even after it was closed and was only dismantled in 2020.

Other famous journeys in the park with medieval theme were the Dragon Flyer, Caterpillar Capers, The Galleon and Pendragon’s Plunge.

Organizers would also perform samples in the Arena of the Theme Park and Magical Shows.

When the owners closed the theme park after 29 years, they also blamed large public events such as the Olympic Games and the jubilee of the queen for a decrease in visitors.

The theme park changed owner of Granada Group in 1986, but it was sold again in 1998 after a buy -out for management.

By 2005, only 336,204 visitors came to Camelot every year when it once pulled more than 500,000. Last year Thorpe Park had 1.7 million visitors.

In February 2009, owners Prime Resorts announced that the park was in receiver – which means that it was placed in the retention responsibility for the ownership of others.

Companies are usually only received if they cannot meet financial obligations.

A construction company, Story Group, then bought the theme park in Carlisle, and hired it to Knight’s Leisure.
