Biden will appear for an interview with ABC News on Friday

President Biden will interview ABC News host George Stephanopoulos on Friday, his first in-depth appearance with a reporter since his shaky performance at last week’s debate, which raised concerns among Democrats about his continued viability as a candidate.

Mr. Stephanopoulos, who has interviewed Mr. Biden before, is expected to tape the interview on Friday, when the president will be on the campaign trail. The network said it would air portions of the interview on the evening news.

Mr. Biden’s advisers have come under intense pressure from Democrats and other key supporters to make the president available to answer questions, in an unscheduled setting, about his performance at the debate. Representative Nancy Pelosi, the former speaker of the House, said on Tuesday that Mr. Biden should speak to reporters, and Mika Brzezinski, the MSNBC host who is a staunch Biden ally, has made the same case.

In the days since the debate, during which Biden has struggled to finish sentences and often appeared dazed onstage, he has spoken at rallies and private fundraising events using a teleprompter. On Monday, he addressed reporters at the White House about the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on presidential immunity but left without answering questions about his health or the future of his candidacy.

Mr. Stephanopoulos is a veteran interviewer who does many of ABC’s interviews with major political figures. He was also a top adviser in Bill Clinton’s White House.
