Are you waiting for an iMac with a bigger screen? Rumor has it it’s on the way, but you might have to be very patient
The iMac M3 is one of the best all-in-one PCs on the market right now, but while it’s a great machine – and the M3 chip peps it up nicely – that 24-inch display can feel cramped. That could be about to change, and those craving more screen space may be in luck.
Mark Gurman, a renowned leaker and Apple expert at Bloomberg, just said: wrote a short note about his expectations for the future of the iMac, and that’s enough to raise my hopes a bit. In his Power On newsletter, Gurman states, “A larger iMac is still something Apple is exploring, too, but it’s unclear whether that will be an M4 product or something coming out next year or later.”
Recent rumors have suggested that an iMac M4 will be released later this year (as well as MacBook Pro and Mac mini models with the new chip), and that further M4 innovations until 2025.
So, according to Gurman, we will see an iMac M4 — presumably a 24-inch refresh — but likely not a model with a larger screen. If it happens, that larger all-in-one PC will likely be something that comes out in 2025, or maybe later (with whatever M-series CPU comes in).
But I want it now!
This is a bit of a surprise; Apple has previously said that we won’t iMac 27-inch coming soon, So if Gurman is right, the company has changed its tune. Of course, Apple is only “exploring” ideas at this point, which is a pretty vague term to use, so all of this could come to nothing, and a larger iMac may never get off the drawing board. (If Gurman is correct in his assertion in the first place.)
I’ve always been a big fan of the iMac, and the color schemes of the different versions helped sell it to me, giving me hope for seeing a more creative side from Apple in the future. While the iMac M3 certainly has its strong points, I was sorely disappointed that the design remained pretty much the same, even with the annoying Magic Mouse and that awkwardly placed charging port on the bottom. Let’s hope that changes in the future.
While it’s tempting to get swept up in the rumors and get excited about a refresh of the iMac 24-inch later in 2024, it’s a good idea to exercise the usual caution when approaching such speculation – particularly the idea of a larger-screen M4 model, as it seems highly unlikely we’ll see that version of the all-in-one this year (particularly given Apple’s previous comments about the 27-inch model). In short, if it does happen, we’re undoubtedly in for a pretty hefty wait for the super-large iMac rumors.
