Huawei Mate 80 series may get advanced facial recognition feature

The Huawei Mate 80 series, which isn’t scheduled to launch until next year, could feature advanced facial recognition technology, according to claims made on social media by a tipster. While the Huawei Mate 70 is speculated to be the Chinese smartphone maker’s next alleged handset that could potentially launch before the end of the year, the successor could reportedly offer users more security and privacy thanks to advanced 3D facial recognition technology embedded under the display.

Huawei Mate 80 Series 3D Facial Recognition

In a post on Chinese social media platform Weibo, tipster Fixed Focus Digital (translated from Chinese) shared a screenshot of a conversation hinting at the presence of an advanced 3D facial recognition camera in the display of the alleged Huawei Mate 80. While it was initially speculated that this would happen with the upcoming Mate 70 models, that may not be the case as the device has reportedly entered mass production.

There’s a good chance that the 3D facial recognition technology will appear on the Mate 80, which is due out late next year.

However, there are still rumors that the Huawei Mate 70 series will beef up security, with a 3D facial recognition sensor coming as standard on all variants. Last year’s base model didn’t have this feature.

Huawei triple smartphone

The Chinese smartphone maker is also said to be gearing up to unveil the first-ever triple-folding smartphone. It was recently spotted in the hands of Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu, with a large inner display that can presumably fold three times. According to a leak, this device could feature a 10-inch inner display, with the cutout for the front-facing camera on the leftmost display.

The tri-fold smartphone could be powered by a Kirin 9-series processor which is also speculated to power the upcoming Huawei Mate 70 series in China. The handset could have an “average” thickness despite being a tri-fold smartphone. It is reported to go into mass production soon.
