Memorials to two slain police officers have been damaged within hours of each other prompting officials to launch a probe into the 'connected' incidents.
The first report of vandalism was made on Saturday afternoon where a tribute to PC Ian Broadhurst, shot and killed in Leeds on Boxing Day 2003, was damaged.
Wreaths and flowers placed at the location were found to be round and black paint sprayed onto the stone.
The next morning, Police were informed of a similar incident involving the memorial to Sgt John Speed, who was shot and killed in Leeds city center on October 31, 1984.
Black paint had been sprayed onto the memorial stone at about 1am that morning.
Police say they believe the incidents are likely linked given the timings and similarities and have branded the vandalism 'disgusting'.
Leeds District Commander, Chief Inspector Steve Dodds said: 'It is absolutely disgusting that someone would deliberately damage the memorials honoring the memories of PC Ian Broadhurst and Sgt John Speed, who were murdered in the line of duty. Protect the public from armed and dangerous perpetrators .

'I know I speak for everyone in West Yorkshire Police and the wider policing family when I say how appalled we are by these incidents.
'PC Broadhurst's Memorial has now been cleaned and Sgt Speed's will soon be restored to its rightful state. Fortunately, we don't expect any permanent damage to occur.
'We are making inquiries to identify who was responsible, and we would like to hear from anyone who witnessed either incident, saw anyone acting suspiciously near either incident or who has information that could assist the investigation .'
PC Broadhurst was shot at Point Blank Range in Dib Lane by former US Marine David Bieber.
He and two colleagues had checked a suspected stolen car at the time.
