I am an interior designer, an outdated kitchen purchase should be avoided at all costs
An interior design expert has shared the design details you should avoid so your kitchen doesn’t look tacky or dated.
Her expert design advice is aimed at helping you improve your home by avoiding common mistakes.
Rossella Marzocchella, kitchen designer at kitchen handle company Decor and Decor, wants to help you steer clear of those items that make your space look dated.
She especially wants to introduce you to a popular accessory for your cupboard: the ceramic handle.
This popular purchase may be ideal for adding a personal touch to your kitchen if you’re going for an “old-fashioned” look, but she warns that it’s not suitable for every kitchen style.
“If you want a vintage kitchen, ceramic kitchen handles are the way to go. But if you want a modern, contemporary design, you should avoid them,” the author says.
“Ceramic kitchen handles can make your kitchen look old-fashioned, as they often don’t match modern kitchen appliances. [usually] “The designs are minimalist in design,” she continued.
“This can produce an incoherent and less coherent picture.”
A different type of handle can sometimes be too much for a smaller space.
“Highly decorative kitchen handles can work in larger kitchens, but in an average-sized kitchen they can be too overpowering and make the kitchen look less modern,” the author says.
“Decorative cabinet handles are also often impractical. Their intricate designs make them difficult to clean, as dust and dirt can easily settle in or on them,” she adds.
According to Marzocchella, glass cabinet knobs were once seen as “glamorous” and “expensive,” but they are no longer synonymous with luxury.
“These once popular kitchen handles are now out of favor and can make your kitchen look dated and cheap,” she said.
She explained that they look old-fashioned because of their vintage quality.
They can also make your kitchen look messier, as they are more likely to collect fingerprints and stains.
“With our busy lives, we often don’t have time for this. In addition, the lack of cleaning, combined with the discoloration from cleaning products, can make the handles in your kitchen look worn,” she says.
Instead, she makes her own stylish suggestions, like choosing cabinet handles that are versatile while also enhancing the look of your kitchen.
Budget Interior Design Tips
Interior designer Judy Hoang shared her furniture tips with The US Sun.
- Buy second-hand furniture and paint it in a color that matches your interior.
- Test an item to see if it is fit for its intended purpose before buying it from a thrift store.
- Shop rugs, lamps, desks and pillows at Target or HomeGoods.
- Invest in classic, timeless pieces.
- Install smart lighting in your home to save money.
“The style and material of your kitchen handles can change the look and feel of your home,” she said.
“For a modern kitchen, you want to install handles that match a sleek, modern look,” she added.
She recommends using handles made of stainless steel, brushed nickel, matte black, satin brass and even copper.
You can also opt for a T-bar, an arched cabinet and cup handles. They all look ‘modern and luxurious’.
