I’m a fashion expert and these are my best buys at the supermarkets
The high street has always been my first choice for updating my wardrobe, but it looks like the supermarket will have some stiff competition this season.
The days of boring shelves of clothing in the supermarket are long gone. It is now definitely worth taking a look around before you pay for your weekly shopping.
Shops like F&F at Tesco, Tu Clothing at Sainsbury’s and Marks & Spencer now offer fashionable clothes at reasonable prices.
Earlier this year, shoppers went wild on TikTok over a F&F co-ord set that looked a lot like a sold-out H&M piece. And just last week, TikTokers were buzzing over a £20 leopard print gilet from George at Asda that was an identical copy of the £80 Damson Madder version.
In 2013, Morrisons launched its clothing line Nutmeg and since then the brand has been leading the way in fantastic quality and affordable fashion.
So if you’re planning on hitting the local store this weekend, we’ve selected the latest items from every supermarket fashion brand that are definitely worth adding to your basket.
Your Clothing at Sainsbury’s
It’s never too early to start preparing your winter wardrobe. This brown suede jacket is a stylish alternative to a traditional biker jacket and is also perfect for layering over sweaters and dresses.
At £50 that’s a great price. You’ll probably find similar items in physical stores like Zara and Mango for at least double that in a few weeks.
This faux leather shoulder bag is a bargain at £15 and resembles the popular Celine teen classic that costs £2,500.
You can wear the bag every day as a crossbody bag, or you can hide the strap inside and turn it into a clutch for special occasions.
No longer seen as “granny shoes,” Mary Janes have become a chic, trendy choice. Plus, these silver crocodile shoes are cheaper than a bunch of flowers.
The metallic finish adds a modern touch, making them perfect for spicing up any outfit or adding flair to a more casual look.
F&F at Tesco
The leopard print is completely trendy again this year and can now also be found in autumn fashion.
A blouse with a tie neck and puff sleeves is the perfect way to accentuate the print and add a sophisticated touch to any look.
The asymmetrical cut of this dress gives it a luxurious look, but that doesn’t mean you have to wear it only during the holidays.
While it’s a fantastic choice for Christmas, its timeless style makes it perfect to wear all the way through autumn too.
Striped pajama pants became a social media sensation earlier this year with the rise of the hashtag #scandistyle.
These striped trousers with elastic waist are super stylish, so now you can wear your comfortable clothes outside without feeling ashamed!
Brands & Spencer
A denim dress can look effortlessly polished and sophisticated, but it’s also super easy to throw on in the morning.
This long version from the M&S basic collection is a real wardrobe classic and available in both small and large sizes.
These new slingbacks have been getting a lot of attention since their launch last week, but be quick because they’re selling out fast.
With their silver buckles, they closely resemble the Ganni shoes that retail for £325, making them a must-have for any fashionista.
This tailored concealed fastening waistcoat from M&S’s premium Autograph collection surprised me with its affordable price of just £59.
This luxurious garment is a perfect addition to any workwear wardrobe.
Pair it with a white long skirt in September and add matching trousers in fall to speed up your morning routine.
Nutmeg at Morrisons
A super soft cardigan is perfect for layering. This is a chic way to embrace the red trend: throw it over your shoulders on chilly nights or shine bright during the festive season.
The rhinestone-embellished buttons give it a more luxurious look and it resembles previous styles from Zara and Mango, where it is likely to cost at least three times as much at £16.
Rope is a good material to invest in because its thickness ensures durability and warmth.
This dress has a timeless silhouette and can be worn both day and night. And with brown set to be a big trend next season, now is the perfect time to buy this dress.
If the blue and white stripes look too much like the trousers you actually wear at night, these pinstripe trousers from Nutmeg might be more your thing.
The neutral colour scheme means they’ll go with almost anything in your wardrobe, while the pinstripe detail will suit more chic settings.
George at Asda
These metallic silver ankle boots are a striking addition to any wardrobe. The pointed toe adds a touch of sophistication to any outfit, while the kitten heel is super comfortable to wear all day long.
Although silver shoes may seem a bit intimidating at first, they are actually very versatile and perfect for both everyday and evening looks.
A good tip is to buy your winter coat early, because the best ones often sell out quickly!
This checked camel colour looks incredibly expensive – the belt detail, gorgeous tonal check and large collar are all big plus points for me.
George’s Studio Edit offers some beautiful, high quality premium pieces, such as this lime green dress. This dress is ideal if you have a special occasion.
The pleated waist and bold detailing are flattering on all body shapes, while the lime green hue adds a pop of colour to your wardrobe.
Is supermarket fashion the new high street?
DEPUTY Fashion Editor Abby McHale says:
Supermarkets have really upped their game when it comes to their fashion lines. These days, when you pop in to do your weekly shop, you can also pick up a selection of wallet-friendly, stylish items for the whole family.
Tesco has just announced a 0.7 percent rise in the quarter thanks to ‘strong growth in clothing’ and M&S has earned the title of the number one destination for womenswear on the high street.
Asda’s George clothing line earned the supermarket £1.5m in 2023, 80 per cent of clothes at Sainsbury’s were sold at full price rather than discounted, and sales of Nutmeg at Morrisons have also risen by 2 per cent over the past year.
How is it that supermarket fashion is so successful?
The clothing is not only affordable but also of good quality, and much of the clothing is part of programs such as the Better Cotton Initiative.
They often stick to classic pieces that they know will last for years.
And because they buy so much stock, they can deliver quickly and the volumes are cheaper.
