I bought a Dior bag for my 6 year old daughter – now all her friends’ mothers are crazy about it

A mother felt she was being judged too harshly because of an expensive handbag she bought for her daughter.

Still, she didn’t regret the expensive purchase and didn’t feel she had to defend her decision.

OUT OF THE BAG

Reddit user Subject_print_9055 is part of a playgroup with her sister and a few other women.

“We’re all in our 30s and 40s, and our daughters are 6 to 8, but we’re all in different stages of life,” she said.

Although she didn’t know anyone in the group who was struggling financially, she admitted that her husband made the most money.

Perhaps they couldn’t all afford the same luxuries, but she couldn’t remember a single disastrous tragedy that had occurred in the past few years.

But that would all change.

It all started when one of the girls was given a handbag, after which everyone else’s daughters were given their own handbags as well.

Because her child was two years younger than the others, she had mixed feelings.

“I didn’t know what to think about getting her a brand new bag, but I also didn’t want to leave her out,” she said.

DESIGNER BAG OR BUST

She eventually gave in, but her eye-catching Dior offer caused a bit of a stir.

“Now I only carry designer bags because I like them and because my daughter wants to be my mini-me, I got us matching crossbody bags. They were adorable!” she said.

“I didn’t see a problem with it because kids can’t tell the difference anyway. And when we had our weekly playdate, no one said anything about it, so I figured no one cared,” she continued.

She may not have seen a problem, but the chat group told a different story.

“All the other moms, including my sister, were messaging me saying they felt like we wanted to show off that we had money,” she said.

TO HINDER HER

She found this especially ‘unfair’ because she knew they were the ones who kept bringing up their bills and buying clothes, while she preferred to stay out of the conversation.

The mother of the first girl to alert everyone to the handbag craze called to say her daughter was in tears.

“She wanted the same bag for her upcoming birthday, but they couldn’t afford it,” she said.

“And even though I feel bad, I also think that this is just part of life. Even my daughter doesn’t get everything she asks for, because she sees it,” she continued.

She was shocked by all the attention the post received and also wanted to share an update.

“My sister and I were able to discuss it over breakfast and [are] “We’re best friends again!” she said.

“The other moms haven’t said anything, but my sister says I’m still welcome since the playdates are at her house. I don’t know if I’ll go yet,” she added.

OTHERS ROADS IN

One Redditor shared how she would have handled the situation.

“Sometimes you just have to send a message saying ‘grow up,’” one Redditor wrote.

“It’s like they’re still in high school but with kids. Just let people live their own lives and focus on your own stuff,” said another.

“Exactly, it’s so childish, just like high school. Weird. I don’t think I could handle that,” agreed another.

Even more people were stunned by the fiasco the bag caused.

“The idea is that ideally she keeps it until it’s worth something, or until she can at least have it for years to come,” one reader wrote.

“When I was having a hard time in college, my girlfriend and I went to a bag party and all the bags were fake, but I carried them like they were real!” one viewer shared his own story.
