Procreate Illustration App for iPad Says: ‘AI Is Not Our Future’

Procreate, the illustration app for iPad, released a statement on Monday stressing that generative artificial intelligence (AI) will never be added to the software. The announcement comes as Apple has gone all out with its suite of generative AI offerings bundled as Apple Intelligence. The design app also appears to be an outlier among competitors like Adobe and Canva, which have invested heavily in AI tools over the past year. Procreate also said that AI poses a moral threat to human creativity.

Procreate Says No to Generative AI

In a after On its website titled “AI is not our future,” Procreate laid out its stance on the technology that most tech companies are rushing to integrate into their offerings. The post highlighted generative AI as “built on a foundation of theft,” likely hinting at the multiple lawsuits against AI companies by artists, musicians, and authors who alleged that their copyrighted work was used to train the AI models.

The company also stated that it does not want to pursue technology that poses a “moral threat” to human creativity. While it admitted that choosing this path would make Procreate an anomaly in the design software industry, as most competitors have already moved on to AI, it added that it decided not to use AI in order to keep the platform community-focused.

Savage Interactive, the parent company of Procreate, further emphasized this by stating that generative AI goes against the company’s policy of providing privacy and giving creators ownership over their artwork.

In a separate after On X (formerly known as Twitter), Procreate CEO James Cuda emphasized his distaste for AI and stressed that he does not approve of the path the industry is taking to integrate generative AI tools into design software.

Notably, the Procreate app for iPad can be purchased for a one-time payment of Rs. 1,299. There is also a Procreate Pocket app available for iOS on the App Store, which costs a one-time fee of Rs. 599.
