Hidden Meaning of Kamala Harris’ Brown Suit – It’s Not Just About Trolling Obama
KAMALA Harris understands better than anyone that she exists in the context of everything that came before her.
That may be why the presidential candidate wore a brown suit to the Democratic National Convention — and it was more than just a tribute to President Barack Obama.
Obama previously received criticism for wearing a beige suit and white shirt during his presidency in 2014.
The controversy led to a debate over whether the color was appropriate for business environments.
Fox’s Lou Dubbs called Obama’s outfit “unpresidential,” implying that Obama’s choice of color for his summer suit was a subtle message to his enemies, according to CNN.
Kamala’s choice of a brown suit at the DNC may not just be a nod to Obama; it also seems like a shout-out to Gen Z supporters.
The vice president went viral on social media when content creators spread memes of her speech at the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Hispanics in 2023.
During the speech, Harris told a story about a saying her mother always swore by.
“My mother — she would sometimes give us a hard time and say to us, ‘I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people. Do you think you just fell out of a coconut tree?'” Harris said, laughing.
“You exist in the context of everything you live in and everything that came before it.”
As Harris’ presidential bid grew in popularity, the meme spread further and more fan-edited and fan-created videos were created.
Users of X, formerly Twitter, noted that the Chloé suit jacket and trousers were specifically chosen for their brown hue.
On Chloé’s website the color is called “coconut brown”.
“What you don’t know is that suit isn’t just brown, it’s not beige, it’s not khaki,” she said one X user.
“It’s actually coconut brown.”
Others were quick to notice the detail.
“I believe we are having the wrong conversation about Kamala Harris’ brown Chloé suit,” she said another DNC viewer.
“Not only because she always wears brown suits, but also because the double-breasted version of [the] “The jacket on the Chloé website is not ‘brown’, ‘beige’ or just ‘brown’, but… ‘coconut brown’.”
X users found the tribute to her Gen-Z followers clever and funny.
“Ohhhhh, thanks for the context!” one joked.
“I have absolutely no doubt that this was not a coincidence. This campaign is like an Easter egg hunt in your favorite movies!” said another.
“So it did indeed fall from a coconut tree,” joked a third.
“She’s a sly troll. Should we all buy this suit now?” another suggested.
While Kamala’s exact suit is custom-made, buyers can also order a similar version (and color) from Chloé.
Money certainly doesn’t grow on trees (like coconuts), though, because the full set comes with a hefty price tag. It includes a $3,390 tailored jacket and $1,350 slim pants in “Coconut Brown.”
