Trump says he’s ‘not surprised’ to be threatened again after Daily Mail reports manhunt for possible hitman
Donald Trump was not briefed on the desperate manhunt for a person who threatened to kill him while traveling to the southern border in Arizona on Thursday.
Rather than the Secret Service or some other law enforcement agency, it was Dailymail.com that briefed Trump on the widely publicized manhunt.
The Republican candidate gave a speech about immigration in the desert near the border and then took questions.
The DailyMail.com correspondent asked him if he felt he was in danger.
Trump admitted he “hadn’t heard anything” about the threat and said police likely wanted to “keep it from him.”
With a smile he said, “Thanks for telling me. Let’s get out of here right now!”
Ronald Lee Syvrud, 66, is wanted by Arizona authorities in connection with an alleged plot to assassinate Donald Trump
The local sheriff had stepped up security in the area around the section of the border wall Trump visited as the search continued for Ronald Lee Syvrud, 66, who is wanted in connection with an alleged assassination plot.
It happened six weeks after Trump was hit in the ear by a bullet during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Police said additional warrants have been issued for Syvrud’s arrest on separate charges, including driving under the influence, failing to appear in court in Wisconsin, and failing to register as a sex offender and hit-and-run after a felony in Arizona.
Ahead of Trump’s speech at the border, Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannels told DailyMail.com that authorities have increased security “based on the threats that have been made.” He also pointed out that the event is taking place “in an open space.”
Syvrud is described as six feet tall, 220 pounds, and wears glasses. His last known address is listed as Benson, Arizona.
Documents show he previously registered as a Democrat and has a lengthy criminal record dating back to 1990. In 2000, he was convicted of, among other things, second-degree sexual assault of a child, a charge he has pleaded not guilty to.
The exact nature of the threats is unclear, but Sheriff Dannels told DailyMail.com they were received “outside of social media.”
“We don’t tolerate any kind of threat or intent to commit violence, so we’re going to find him. He’s going to jail,” Dannels said.
“He’s a registered sex offender here in Cochise County, and we were looking for him. He’s out of compliance as part of his offenses. So we’re looking for him on that count.
“We’re going to arrest him for that. But also the fact that his wrist was clearly pointed at this event. So we want to talk to him about that.”
While Dannels indicated that security was being ramped up ahead of the speech, Secret Service snipers could be seen perched on a crane monitoring the area.

Officials said security has been tightened over the alleged assassination plot
The planned attack on Trump’s life was reportedly timed before his trip to the border in Sierra Vista, a location his campaign has already visited.
Trump’s running mate JD Vance visited Sierra Vista three weeks ago, where he highlighted security problems in the mountainous region, calling it a “smuggler’s paradise.”
Arizona officials believe Syvrud is at large in the border region and are urgently trying to locate him in preparation for Trump’s visit.
Ahead of his trip to the region, Trump said on Truth Social on Wednesday that he would tackle “the plague of migrant crime that our so-called border czar, Comrade Kamala Harris, has unleashed upon America.”
DailyMail.com has contacted the Trump campaign for comment.
The alleged plot is said to be taking place in Sierra Vista, Arizona, where Trump’s running mate JD Vance toured just three weeks ago (pictured during the trip).
During the trip to the border, Vance highlighted security concerns surrounding the area where the alleged plot against Trump was planned, calling the region a “smuggler’s paradise.”
Secret Service agents rushed the stage on July 13 and pushed Trump to the ground
When Vance visited Sierra Vista three weeks ago, he criticized Vice President Kamala Harris as a “failed border czar” and blamed her for the migrant crisis.
The Ohio senator also highlighted security concerns in the “smuggler’s paradise” where the alleged plot against Trump was hatched.
The area has a number of security risks, as it is largely mountainous and the terrain is dangerous, allowing smugglers and drug traffickers to remain undetected from various vantage points.
“It’s unbelievable what we’re allowing to happen at the southern border, and it’s because Kamala Harris refuses to do her job,” Vance said at the time.
