The leader of a notorious gang of wild teenagers who kicked a father of three dead outside his house was quietly released from prison after serving just 17 years for murder.

The death of Garry Newlove in Warrington in 2007 was a cause Célèbre for campaigners from Justice with his widow Helen later bred for her work with regard to juvenile crime.

Innocent Gary was malignant murdered for his daughter, then only 12, after he had earned the group out of hand when he caught them on his wife's car while he was drunk and high on cannabis.

Adam Swellings, 19, Stephen Sorton, 17, and Jordan Cunliffe, 16, worked together to attack the 47 -year -old father in a brutal way, repeatedly kicking his head until he died.

All three teenagers received lifelong penalties after the death of Mr. Newlove, with swellings, Sorton and Cunliffe who received recommended conditions of 17, 15 and 12 years.

The youngest two have since been released on conditional release, with swelling – now 36 – which appear before the board in November in an attempt to be released on license.

He was described in conditional hearings such as 'a very aggressive and angry young man'.

In December he was told that the panel had recommended that he was liberated from prison. The Ministry of Justice has now confirmed to MailOnline that it was subsequently released on license.

A spokesperson for the MOJ said: 'This was a horrible crime and our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Garry Newlove.

“Adam Swellings will have a license for the rest of his life, with strict conditions and intensive probationary period supervision after he has been released, and he is confronted with an immediate return to prison if he breaks the rules.”

Garry's wife Helen has tireless campaign for victims of antisocial behavior to be taken more seriously.

In 2010 she became Baroness Newlove for her work with regard to juvenile crime and later served as commissioner of the victims for England and Wales from 2012 to 2019.

Earlier, a parole board spokesperson told MailOnline: 'We can confirm that a panel of the parole board has led the release of Adam Swellings after an oral hearing.

'Parole Board decisions are exclusively aimed at what risk a prisoner could represent to the public if it is released and whether that risk is manageable in the community.

Two years ago the conditional administration made him free for a step to open the prison conditions, but the decision was blocked by former justice secretary Dominic Raab.

The current Minister of Justice Shabana Mahmood could have asked the Parole Board to re -view the case to ensure that it had followed the procedure, but did not apply to use these powers.

According to the current conditional laws, she did not have the power to prevent swelling from being released.

A summary of the three -person panel that recommended its release, said that Swellings had shown 'empathy against the victims of his offensive.

“He told the panel that he had matured during his sentence and that he had been selfish at the time of the index violation.”

It also said that his behavior in prison had been 'positive' and added that Mr. Swellings had 'compliance'.

The board added that at the time of crime swelling made bad decisions and had a perception that deserved violence and acceptance. '

The summary said that swelling was rather a 'very aggressive and angry young man'.

During his lawsuit, the jury also heard how the teenager at the time bingered and used scooping animal scannabis.

They stated that protective factors would reduce the risk of recidivism, such as abstinence from drugs, controlling alcohol and avoiding antisocial friends.

The summary also noted that swellings was supported by his family.

The 36-year-old ended a minimum prison sentence in August 2024, with his conditional hearing in November 2024 as the first where he was eligible for release.

The summary concluded that the panel was 'satisfied' that 'imprisonment was no longer necessary for the protection of the public' after the hearing.

The continued: 'The panel took into account the extremely serious nature of the index and that the lifestyle of Mr. Swellings at the time saw that he is concerned with violence, abuse of drugs and alcohol abuse.

'MR Swellings was 18 at the time of the index and is now 36 years old. The panel found proof of ripening, which was supported by the professionals involved in the case.

'The panel considered a strong release plan and it noticed the support that was available for Mr. Swellings of his family.

It added that a series of strict license conditions had been placed on swelling, including living on approved accommodation, GPS tracking and regular drug tests and an exclusion zone.
