Phew! I narrowly avoided yet another Connections fail today – but that was mostly down to luck. Once again, I lost my bet on red herrings – I thought there might be a basketball connection (HEAT, THUNDER, CLIPPERS, MAGIC) but was wrong, or that it had something to do with wizards/witches (CAPE, MAGIC, TAROT? FIRE??) but was (correctly) even more wrong. And then I finally bet on a hairdressing one (with BRUSH, CLIPPERS, GEL and, er, SET) and was almost right.
Now that I had no more chances, I had to guess them all right at once and when I looked around I saw the yellow group ‘Explosive sound’. Back at the barbershops I added CAPE and got blue, then put four hot sounding words together for the group Chilipeper. It was a close call, but I figured it out.
How was your day? Send me an email and let me know.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games from the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a bit harder, blue is often quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you don’t technically have to solve the last question, because you can answer it by elimination. Plus, you can make a maximum of four mistakes, which gives you some breathing room.
It is a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can obscure the answers.
It is free to play via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
