Tecno unveils world’s first triple-folding phone with massive 10-inch display
Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 was unveiled as a tri-foldable smartphone concept at IFA Berlin on Wednesday. As the name suggests, the handset appears to feature a tri-foldable display with a dual-hinged mechanism. It has been introduced as a successor to the Tecno Phantom Ultimate, a rollable smartphone concept that the company unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 in Barcelona in February. While the new concept device has a compact candybar form factor when folded, it can also be unfolded to take advantage of a massive 10-inch internal display with minimal crinkle.
However, the Chinese smartphone maker did not want to say whether the device will be released soon.
Specifications of Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2
According to According to Tecno, the Phantom Ultimate 2 features a 6.48-inch cover display and a massive 10-inch LTPO OLED inner screen with a resolution of 1,620 x 2,880 pixels. This display has a 4:3 aspect ratio. The company also claims that it is the first foldable device on the market to adopt touch and display driver integration (TDDI) technology, resulting in a single chip that houses both the display driver and the touch sensor.
In terms of ergonomics, it is 11mm thin, which puts it on a par with other book-style foldable smartphones on the market in terms of thickness, such as the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold (10.5mm), despite featuring an extra foldable display. Interestingly, it is thinner than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, which has a thickness of 12.1mm when folded.
Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 also features a dual-hinge mechanism that is said to have been folded and unfolded 300,000 times. The smartphone also features an ultra-thin battery that is just 0.25mm thick.
While the concept triple handset has been shown off, Tecno has yet to confirm if and when the handset will go into production. Concept smartphones are typically launched to highlight a company’s manufacturing capabilities and technologies it may have in development. However, a triple smartphone from another Chinese company could be coming to market soon, with Huawei reportedly planning to become the world’s first company to launch such a device – an event scheduled for October.
