It’s no secret that Google Photos is getting some upgrades for video content. In early August 2024, we reported on a number of updates to the popular cloud photo storage app.
Hidden code in the update indicated that video editing would become much easier. Also, the user interface has been improved and there is an option to increase/decrease the speed.
Now, thanks to a teardown by Android Authoritywe have an even better idea of what to expect from Google Photos’ improved video editor.
Video editing in Google Photos
While not technically a video editing app, the ability to trim video content in Google Photos isn’t new – but it’s fair to say it’s pretty basic in design and functionality. According to the Android app’s version 6.97 teardown, users can expect a much improved experience, with more useful tools.
The new editing tools, originally called Spotlights, have been renamed to Presets, with four key features.
Basic cut let us crop highlights from a video and enhance the color
Slow movement adds slow motion to parts of a video.
Track follows video topics and zooms in on them.
Zoom will increase or decrease the magnification of an area.
These options can be found when you select a video and tap Edit. From here, users will need to scroll down to the Preset option, which is not available in the current version of the app. Using the new tools, Android Authority explained that effects and duration are controlled via a simple slider.
So we’re not expecting it to come close to the levels of control found in the best video editing software we’ve reviewed – this isn’t a CapCut alternative, let alone a replacement for Premiere Pro. But it could prove to be one of the best video editing software options for beginners and content creators who need to quickly cut up clips. We just hope Google comes up with a release date soon.
