Newborn baby taken to hospital in critical condition as 25-year-old woman placed under police guard

Detectives from Victoria are investigating a suspected attack on a newborn baby.

Detectives from the Dandenong Crime Investigation Unit are investigating the incident, which left a newborn baby in a critical condition in hospital on Friday.

The baby was found at around 2.40am outside an address on Gladstone Road in Dandenong North, 27km south-east of Melbourne’s CBD, with life-threatening injuries.

A 25-year-old woman from a house on that street was also taken to hospital, where she remains under police guard.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation.

The incident came just a day after Australia was shocked by an alleged attack on a baby in a Brisbane park.

A woman and her baby were enjoying a picnic at Hanlon Park in Stones Corner on Tuesday afternoon when they were approached by a stranger.

The man is believed to have thrown a thermos of coffee over the boy, causing 60 percent burns on his body, before fleeing.
