But a teacher on TikTok, who goes by the username @Misswhitebio, has revealed a number of outfits that are considered “inappropriate” for teachers to wear.

@Misswhitebio is American, so some rules may not apply to British schools. In addition, most schools have their own dress codes that staff must adhere to.

The first outfit shows a woman wearing a gray long-sleeved turtleneck sweater, over which she wears a loose-fitting V-neck sweater, jeans and flats.

@Misswhitebio commented: Feel free to tell me what’s wrong with this outfit. This one’s easy, everyone together now… jeans and holes in the jeans.

The second outfit was a female teacher in a classroom, dressed in light colored linen pants and a black sleeveless top.

@Misswhitebio said it would not be appropriate for a teacher to wear “no sleeves” at her school.

What are teachers allowed to wear in the UK?

Most British schools expect teachers to dress professionally and neatly.

This often means wearing ‘smart business attire’ or ‘professional attire’, such as:

  • Business casual: smart suits, unusual combinations of jacket/trousers/skirt and formal footwear
  • Modesty: Clothing that is not too revealing
  • Comfort: Clothing that allows you to move easily, such as sitting, standing, and lifting your arms
  • Practical: teaching can involve a lot of movement and interaction
  • Accessories: Keep accessories minimal and professional.
