Women were more likely to find it annoying when their table companion picked up the iron: four in ten found it ‘shocked’, compared to 34 percent of men.

The research found that people from the North West (43 percent) were most likely to be offended, followed by people from the East Midlands (42 percent).

The Welsh found it the least offending, with only 28 percent saying using a knife and fork for burgers made them feel “a bit strange”, according to a TGI Fridays poll of 2,000 Britons.

Etiquette expert Jo Bryant explains: “The correct way to eat a hamburger is to pick it up, take a bite, and put it down between bites.

“The worst burger etiquette would be to eat it all at once, or to add side dishes like fries.

“If the burger is particularly large, it is appropriate to cut it in half. Cutlery would also be used when dining with royalty.”
