Career Advice From Karren Brady On Finding The Right Job After Graduating From College
APPRENTICE star and West Ham United vice-chairman Karren Brady answers all your career questions and also tries out our money-saving tips.
Here she gives advice to a reader whose son is struggling to find work after graduating from college.
Q: My son graduated with honors in computer science last May.
He has gained a lot of interesting work experience, had a summer job in marketing and volunteered for a charity for many years.
He is on LinkedIn, registered with all the tech recruitment agencies in London and applies for graduate and junior IT jobs every day, but he doesn’t even get a response from most of them.
He is increasingly fading into the background, because although we knew it wouldn’t be easy, he had hoped to have a role by now.

Is there anything else he – or we – could do?

A: Congratulations on graduating with the highest distinction!
It’s great to hear that he’s being proactive in his job search.
He is taking all the necessary steps, but the search process can be challenging, so encourage him to stay positive.
Your son should tailor his resume to each application, focusing on the skills most relevant to the position.
His LinkedIn profile should be up to date with his latest projects, skills and experiences.
A professional photo, a strong headline and a detailed summary can make his profile more attractive.
Encourage him to engage with industry content, share posts, and comment on discussions to increase his visibility.
He might also consider broadening his job search criteria.
Freelance or part-time positions can provide valuable experience and connections and can lead to permanent employment.
If he doesn’t get a response to an application, he can send a polite email to express his continued interest and ask for feedback.
The job market is tight, but his skills and qualifications make him a valuable candidate.
