Google may soon integrate Gemini Live with Android Auto

Gemini Live is reportedly coming to Android Auto and could become the default virtual assistant. Last month, Google launched Gemini Live, which allows users to have two-way voice-activated conversations with the AI. The feature is currently available through the Gemini app, but it seems that the tech giant may expand it to other platforms. Notably, Gemini Live is only available to paid Gemini Advanced subscribers. Otherwise, Android Auto already offers the standard version of Gemini in Android Auto.

Gemini Live is reportedly being added to Android Auto

Android Authority spotted Hints of this feature were found in the latest Android Auto version 12.8. 143544. The publication found mentions of the AI feature in the code strings within the app. While Gemini Live itself was not mentioned, a few strings showed the sparkle icon and the codename “kitt” was mentioned.

The mention of “kitt” is interesting because it could be a reference to the AI car in the 80s show Knight Rider. One of the strings would have contained “ic_assistant_kitt_live_icon” with the sparkle icon next to it. Another would have been called “gearhead_assistant_action_kitt_live_query>Start conversation<".

The latter would be an instruction to initiate a query with the AI. While Kitt is likely referring to Gemini, the mention of “live” is believed to refer to Gemini Live. It would make sense to add Gemini Live to Android Auto, as the hands-free mode is more convenient while driving.

Furthermore, the report (via tipster AssembleDebug) found the feature listed in a separate area of the app. In this section, “GeminiLiveAssistantAction” was clearly listed in an internal assistant menu that is not visible to app users. If the claim is true, then the Gemini Live integration may be intentional.

It should be noted, however, that the inclusion of the feature in the app’s code is not confirmation that Google will indeed bring the voice-activated AI chatbot to Android Auto. Until the tech giant officially announces the feature, no further details about Gemini Live can be ascertained.

Notably, Gemini Live is part of the Gemini Advanced subscription. It can be subscribed to via the Google One AI Premium subscription that costs Rs. 1,950 per month, after a one-month free trial.
