A mother was left furiously after her 14-year-old son was asked if he was 'comfortable in his gender' in a national school research.

A British parent, who placed anonymous on Mumnet, said that her teenage son had been asked to fill in an online form alongside his colleague students.

She said the schoolboy had been asked about his sexual orientation and whether he was 'comfortable' in his gender.

Other questions include whether a students had sexual experiences and whether they had received or sent inappropriate photos to others, she said.

It was claimed that it came from the My Health, My School Survey, a nationally available questionnaire.

According to the website, these surveys are conducted on students from year three to year 11, with each customized age for age to generate 'essential information about the health and well -being' of students.

Thinking about the survey that her son had been asked to fill in, the mother wrote: 'I understand that some questions secure the views.

'But b ***** hell the sexual orientation, etc. Why on the hell is that relevant to my son's education?

She claimed that teachers at the school – who have not been identified – discouraged her son to check the option 'Rather not say' to the questionnaire.

“I just feel that his privacy has really fell in and he does not know himself whether he is straight/gay or whatever,” she added.

The My Health, my school research consists of ten themes, including questions about gambling, drugs, alcohol and tobacco and sexual health.

Other survey topics also include a 'All about me' section, as well as questions about diet, play, physical activity, mental health and school.

The individual Pupil Perception Survey is also performed for children older than 16 years, as well as those special educational needs.

The survey is completely anonymous and it is not mandatory for students to fill in if they don't want to.

Lucy Marsh, from the Family Education Trust, said MailOnline: 'Asking questions of a sexual nature to children in year 9 and reporting them to sexual health providers such as Brook is completely unacceptable.

'This is a gross violation of the privacy of both the child and their family.

'Schools should not require children to complete surveys about their personal lives and sexuality, because this has no influence on their education.

'It is also inappropriate to obtain such information without their parents' permission.

“Children under the age of 16 should not be exposed to explicit sexual language or encouraged to think that minor sexual activity is normal.”

It is understanding that the survey is not a survey of the Department for Education.
