‘World’s most posh McDonald’s’ reopens to the public after eight-month renovation – and customers say it’s like a ‘five-star hotel’
For those who fancy a sophisticated meal but are on a budget for fast food, there is a special McDonald’s in Budapest that promises an elegant touch to your cheeseburger.
This newly renovated branch, located in the historic Nyugati railway station, recently reopened to the public and has been compared by customers to a five-star hotel, cementing its reputation as the world’s most glamorous McDonald’s.
The McDonald’s originally opened in 1990 and is located in a section of the train station built in 1877 by the Gustave Eiffel company, the same company that later built the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
The station itself has long been admired for its architectural grandeur, making it a fitting setting for what Lonely Planet calls McDonald’s “most elegant” location.
Moreover, MIC magazine previously described the Budapest branch as “impressive” because of its “elaborate, colonial ceiling.”

Following a recent renovation, which saw the restaurant close in January, it now has a stylish, modern look while retaining the building’s historic beauty.
The upgrade includes state-of-the-art kitchen technology, touchscreen kiosks and the ability to order through McDonald’s mobile app, according to Metro.
A notable feature is the food conveyor belt, which allows customers to watch their meal being moved between two floors of the kitchen in a glass box.
While the branch now features modern design elements such as mirrored glass surfaces and custom furnishings, designers were careful to preserve the location’s rich history.
The detailed stucco ceilings, antique lamps and a wrought iron gate have been preserved, combining the old with the new.
The McCafé has also been moved to the entrance and the outdoor terrace has been transformed into a stylish, lounge-like environment, ideal for soaking up the atmosphere of Budapest while enjoying a cup of coffee.
On Tripadvisor, the fast food restaurant has an average of four stars. One reviewer wrote: ‘I have seen several good McDonald’s restaurants in Europe, but the best I have seen is McDonald’s Hyugati in Budapest.
‘The interior is completely different from the interiors we have in the United States. The best McDonald’s I have ever seen “inside and out”!’

A third cheered: ‘Great building – go for that alone! Great atmosphere, much nicer than other McDonald’s, didn’t feel so soulless!’
Another customer described the location as “one of the most glamorous McDonald’s locations in the world,” while a second customer noted that it was “quite a unique experience to eat a cheap burger in such a lavish interior.”
Finally, one impressed guest compared the Budapest establishment to a restaurant in a five-star hotel. He wrote: ‘The interior is really beautiful and looks more like a restaurant in a five-star hotel. I deducted one star because it is so busy and the queues are so long.’
