Tourists reveal the ‘worst’ places for pedestrians, from the destination where ‘bikes run you over’ to a city so busy a traveller hails a taxi… just to cross the road safely
Walking is often a great way to get to know a destination.
But in some places this activity is at best a living hell, and at worst even life-threatening.
And the locations? Over to the travelers of Redditwho took to the site to share the places where they had their least enjoyable experiences as a pedestrian.
User ‘Lakuriqidites’ started the discussion on the ‘Travel’ forum when he asked: ‘In which city/country did you have the “worst experience” as a pedestrian?’
From a European city where ‘bikes will crush you’ to a place where a contestant had to take a taxi to cross a road, scroll down for the places in the world that are least walkable…
A Redditor described Egypt’s capital, Cairo (pictured), as ‘hell on earth’
Egypt’s largest city and capital has caused unrest among some pedestrians, with Redditor ‘mscherrybaby007’ even describing the city as ‘hell for feet’.
User ‘Wandercay’ agreed: ‘Drivers often drive on the other side of the road and most of them don’t seem to follow the rules. On top of that, we were harassed by people trying to make money off of us when we were walking around the city. They followed us and wouldn’t leave us alone.’
‘Elegant-Passion2199’ added: ‘In Cairo I spent so much money on taxis, the lack of sidewalks, being constantly hassled to buy stuff, the heat, the trash and the smell.’
Houston, Texas
Houston, Texas (pictured) was described by a Redditor as the ‘worst pedestrian city’ in the US
Houston, walkers have a problem.
Redditor ‘Refrito_perdido’ described Houston as ‘by far’ the ‘worst pedestrian city’ in the US
The user explained: ‘[There are] either no sidewalks or they’re right on a road (no boulevard), plus the zoning is either f***** up or non-existent. So walking from one place to another just doesn’t make sense. And the urban sprawl is no joke either.’
User ‘koreamax’ added: ‘I grew up in San Francisco and thought most cities were walkable. I visited Houston and went out with friends for the night. I drunkenly said I was going to walk back to my hotel. It took me four hours.’
User ‘thrwaway75132’ added: ‘Even if you can see where you need to go, there’s an eight-lane road with no zebra crossings between you and your destination.’
Hanoi, Vietnam
One Redditor said Hanoi (above) was ‘by far the worst hiking experience I could ever imagine’
Vietnam’s capital, Hanoi, has been criticised for forcing pedestrians onto the streets.
‘Aceholio404’ wrote: ‘Hanoi is by far the worst walking experience I could ever imagine. All the sidewalks are literally covered with motorbikes or pop-up restaurant chairs that they hide when the police come by because it’s not allowed. You can’t walk a single block without having to walk into the extremely busy streets.
‘Honestly, it does add to the experience and I want to stress that it is a beautiful city and a beautiful country, but I am convinced that there is no worse walking experience in a city.’
Amsterdam, Netherlands
A user claimed that in Amsterdam (above) ‘the bikes will crush you’
With a whopping 400 kilometers of bike paths, Amsterdam is ideal for cyclists, but – as some Redditors point out – not for pedestrians.
‘FroeverKangaroo’ wrote: ‘Amsterdam was stressful for me as a pedestrian. The bikes run you over.
‘We were staying just outside the city centre, so that probably exacerbated the situation as our daily walk to see the sights often found us following the same paths as cyclists doing the faster parts of their commute.’
User ‘AW23456__99’ said: ‘I’m from Southeast Asia and Amsterdam made me very anxious as a pedestrian.’
An angry Redditor, ‘Golfandrun’, added: ‘The cyclists are ignorant assholes.’
The Philippines
Trying to cross the road in the Philippines is like ‘taking your life in your hands’. Above is a busy street in the country’s capital, Manila
One country that resonates with many Redditors is the Philippines.
‘A_panda_named_ewok’ wrote: ‘Manila was my first reaction. The Philippines is beautiful and the people are so incredibly friendly, but when you try to cross those huge roads (with no zebra crossings) you literally risk your life playing frog.’
User ‘Cgtdream’ agreed: ‘Crossing traffic in the [Phillipines] should be a sport. Could have died there so many times.’
User ‘sudoku602’ added: ‘I once had to take a taxi to cross the street because pedestrians couldn’t.’
‘Gie_lokimum’ said: ‘Filipina here. Last time I visited, it took me 30 minutes to cross the road.’
Bali, Indonesia
Bali is ‘barely walkable’ according to Redditors, due to ‘traffic’ and ‘lack of sidewalks’. Above is a typical street in the town of Ubud
Despite its popularity as a tourist destination, Bali isn’t exactly pedestrian-friendly, according to Reddit users.
‘Legitamate_Map963’ wrote: ‘Bali is barely walkable in tourist areas – no sidewalks or at 90 percent of the places. And so much traffic.’
To which: ‘CityboundMermaid’ replied: ‘Yeah, Bali’s missing sidewalks are wild! I was fine during the day, but at night? No, damn it.’
User ‘bb79’ agreed: ‘Bali also gets my vote. In Ubud I was constantly thinking, “Where’s the sidewalk?” Every building and shop seems to have its own makeshift strip of narrow, disjointed tiles, concrete or dirt, but it’s usually easier to walk on the road.’
