I am a hair surgeon – DIY method can promote hair growth, but the smell can be unpleasant
A little smelly DIY could help restore thinning hair, a hair transplant surgeon says.
Dr. Matee Rajput revealed some home remedies to promote hair growth. Although they are unconventional, he says people have seen results with them.
Doctor Rajput is a hair transplant surgeon and Surgical Director at the KSL Clinic, with offices in Kent and Manchester, England.
In an interview with The US Sun, he shared some unusual hair growth tips that people have been raving about for generations.
FUNKY SCISSORS
Dr. Rajput said home remedies can be fun to try as part of a holistic hair care routine, even though they are not scientifically proven.
One of the most loved hair treatments is using a smelly ingredient from the kitchen.
“Onion juice is rich in sulfur, which is believed to promote collagen production and stimulate hair growth,” he said.
“Mash or grate an onion to extract its juice, apply directly to the scalp and leave on for about 30 minutes before rinsing with a mild shampoo.
“The strong odor can be unpleasant, but many people report noticeable results after consistent use.”
BEAUTIFUL MANE
Dr Rajput revealed why many beauty enthusiasts swear by using rice water in their hair care routine.
This DIY solution takes less than an hour to make and the food is readily available in many homes.
“Rice water, the starchy water left over after soaking or cooking rice, is rich in vitamins and minerals, including amino acids and inositol, which can strengthen hair and promote growth,” he said.
Rinse the rice thoroughly and soak it in water for 30 minutes to an hour.
“Strain the water and use it as a final rinse after washing and conditioning your hair.
“Leave it on for 10-20 minutes before rinsing it out with plain water.”
STRONGER BEACHES
Dr. Rajput shared a quick DIY treatment that helps prevent hair breakage.
“Fenugreek seeds are rich in proteins and nicotinic acid, which are known to strengthen hair and prevent hair loss,” he said.
“Soak fenugreek seeds in water overnight, grind them into a paste and apply it to your scalp and hair.
“Let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour before rinsing it off with water.”
SCALP STIMULATOR
A daily habit stimulates hair growth without the need for topical ingredients.
“The inversion method involves hanging your head upside down for a few minutes every day to increase blood flow to the scalp, which some say can stimulate hair growth,” he said.

Sit in a chair and rest your head between your knees, or lie down with your head hanging over the edge of a bed.
Stay in this position for 4-5 minutes every day.
“Follow up with a scalp massage to further improve circulation.”
Dr. Matee Rajput previously revealed a “counterintuitive” way to ensure healthier, longer hair.
He said it’s “very helpful” to get your hair trimmed every six to eight weeks, as removing split ends helps prevent breakage.
He added that massaging the scalp daily for at least 10 minutes can improve blood circulation and thus promote hair growth.
