NYT Connections Today (Contest #455) – The Answers
The answers to today’s Connections game, #455, are…
- YELLOW: VERBS IN A CAKE RECIPE BAKING, WHIPPING, DEFROSTING, PREHEATING
- GREEN: WHAT A HEART DOES WHEN IT’S EXCITED POND, PUMP, RACE, STORM
- BLUE: CHURCH TITLES BISHOP, PASTOR, POPE, PRIOR
- PURPLE: ___ BOYS BAD, BEACH, HARDY, PET STORE
- My rating: Moderate
- My score: 2 mistakes
Today’s Connections puzzle is full of misdirection. Virtually every group had a different answer that could have fit into it, and there were several other possible connections that turned out to be dead ends. Take BEAT, BAKE, FROST, PREHEAT – which ended up being the easiest yellow group, VERBS IN A PIE RECIPE: POUND could also have been a recipe word, and I tried that with several other combinations before I got the right quartet. And similarly, the WHAT A HEART DOES WHEN EXCITED group (green) could easily have contained BEAT if it had simply been WHAT A HEART DOES.
Luckily purple was a relatively easy [blank] format today; the second I saw PET SHOP I thought ‘BOYS’ and it wasn’t hard to identify BEACH, HARDY and BAD to form that group. Ditto the blue ECCLESIASTICAL TITLES group. So, overall not that hard, but far from a piece of cake (even if cakes were one theme).

- PURPLE: LOGOS WITH HORSES COACH, GODIVA, MUSTANG, POLO
What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games from the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a bit harder, blue is often quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you don’t technically have to solve the last question, because you can answer it by elimination. Plus, you can make a maximum of four mistakes, which gives you some breathing room.
It is a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can obscure the answers.
It is free to play via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
