NEW DELHI: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Tuesday accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of plotting to abolish reservations in India.
In a post on X in Hindi, Mayawati criticised the Congress party for not implementing OBC reservation during their tenure despite the fact that a caste census had been conducted in the country.
“The Congress party government did not implement OBC reservation when it was in power at the Centre for a long time. And this party, which conducted caste census in the country, does not dream of coming to power under its cover now either,” Mayawati said in a post on X.

Mayawati’s remarks were a response to Rahul Gandhi’s statements during his visit to the United States, in which he said, “We will consider abolishing reservations if India is a fair country.”
She urged people to be cautious about what she termed the ‘Congress party drama’ and asserted that they would never conduct a caste census in future.
“Now be careful of this drama of Congress party supreme leader Rahul Gandhi where he has said abroad that when India is in a better condition, we will end reservation for SC, ST, OBC. This makes it clear that Congress has been conspiring for years to end their reservation,” Mayawati added.

Mayawati warned that if Congress comes to power, they will try to remove the reservations. She termed Rahul’s remarks as a pretext.
“People of these classes should be careful about this dangerous statement of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi because once this party comes to power at the Centre, it will definitely end their reservation on the pretext of this statement. These people should be absolutely careful about this party which pretends to save the Constitution and reservation,” she said.

Mayawati also called the Congress ‘anti-reservations’ and held them responsible for the resignation of Dr BR Ambedkar as Law Minister because the party failed to uphold reservation rights.
“Until casteism is completely eradicated from the country, the social, economic and educational condition of these classes will not improve even if the situation in India improves relatively. Therefore, it is necessary to maintain the correct constitutional system of reservations until casteism is completely eradicated,” she said.
