MANDJA: Nagamangalaa city located 45 kilometers from Karnataka’s Mandya District witnessed heightened tensions after a clash between two groups during a Ganesh procession around 8pm on Wednesday.
The incident took place when devotees of Badarikoppalu were carrying two Ganesh idols for immersion.
When the procession reached a place of worship, thugs threw stones, leading to a violent scuffle between the two groups. The police had to use mild aggression to disperse the crowd.
After the incident, the groups began singing hymns to their gods, further increasing tension in the city.
According to sources, several people were injured in the stone-throwing and police struggled to control the crowd, which was squabbling with each other.
Youths from Badarikoppalu later stopped the procession at the police station and demanded the arrest of the thugs who had pelted stones at them.
Senior officers from both the police and the tax authorities rushed to the scene to disperse the crowd and defuse tension.
As a precautionary measure, Thasildar G. Adarsh, who was present at the scene, issued a ban under Section 144 of the CrPC, prohibiting the assembly of four or more persons in groups.
Additional police forces from Mandya, Bellur and Bindiganavile were deployed to regain control of the situation. Police fired tear gas canisters to control the crowd.
The Ganesha idols have been temporarily placed at a temple and devotees are demanding the arrest of those who disrupted the procession. The situation remains tense even after two hours, sources confirmed.
