Analysts say the PS5 Pro could potentially sell about as much as the PS4 Pro –
Despite the PS5 Pro’s high price tag, Sony’s new mid-generation console could sell as well as the PS4 Pro.
This was reported by research agency Ampere analysis (via VGC) which determined that PS5 Pro sales will reach similar levels to the enhanced version of the PS4. The console is expected to sell up to 1.3 million units at its launch in November 2024, compared to 1.7 million units for the PS4 Pro in 2016.
“The price of the PS5 Pro is inevitably going to attract a lot of comment,” said Piers Harding-Rolls, games research director at Ampere Analysis. “The price difference between the PS5 and PS5 Pro is between 40-50%, which is significantly more than the difference between the PS4 and PS4 Pro at launch.
“In the US, the PS4 Pro launched for $399 and the slim PS4 was $299 at the time, a 33% difference. Additionally, the slim PS4 had a retail price of $299, down from the original PS4 launch price of $399.”
Sony has confirmed that the PS5 Pro will cost $699.99 / £699.99 and approximately AU$1052.99 respectively, representing a $200 / £200 / AU$253.99 price difference between the Pro and the now base version of the PS5. This makes it Sony’s most expensive piece of gaming console hardware to date.
Harding-Rolls added that while the PS5 Pro is expensive, that won’t deter PlayStation fans from buying the console. He said: “We expect the price point will drive demand from some consumers, but for PlayStation enthusiasts, price is less of a concern.”
Total PS4 Pro sales reached 14.5 million units, roughly 12% of total PS4 sales. Harding-Rolls estimates the PS5 Pro will do the same, with sales of around 13 million units expected by 2029.
The PS5 Pro launches worldwide on November 7, 2024, with pre-orders beginning on September 26.
