EU’s top privacy watchdog opens probe into Google’s compliance with AI legislation

Google’s top privacy watchdog in the EU launched an investigation on Thursday into whether the search engine giant adequately protected the personal data of users in the European Union before using it to develop its foundational AI model.

The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC), the lead EU regulator for most major US internet companies due to the location of their EU operations in Ireland, said the investigation related to the Alphabet unit’s Pathways Language Model 2 (PaLM 2).

“This regulatory investigation is part of broader efforts by the DPC, working with its EU/EEA (European Economic Area) supervisors, to regulate the processing of personal data of EU/EEA individuals in the development of AI models and systems,” the DPC said in a statement.

Last week, social media platform X decided not to train its AI systems with personal data collected from users in the European Union until the Irish regulator has the opportunity to withdraw consent.
