When the new mother announced she had named her daughter ‘Lucy’, her friend was ‘really angry’ at the news.

To go to Reddit’s Name Nerds threadShe revealed that her friend even uses the same unique nickname she has for her dog as a hashtag for her baby on social media.

“I have been friends with this girl my whole life, she knows my dog well,” she wrote.

“I know it’s quiet, but it’s really bothering me.

“Am I ridiculous?”

When inundated with people asking her to reveal her nickname, she said it was “Gary Blucy.”

“What’s weird about naming your newborn baby???” she added.

“It’s an inside joke between my husband and I, so it’s weird that she uses that nickname as a joke too, even if it’s for fun on social media.”

She even discussed the problem with her friend, who had “no idea” why she was even concerned about it.

“There is no underlying problem between us,” she insisted.

I have 5 names – my third is after a dog, but another has people crying

“I love this baby and I take it as a compliment, but when my dog passes away, it will be sad for me to hear ‘Gary Blucy.’

“That’s where my brain goes.”

She also said that she would be fine with her friend using the nickname for her daughter in secret, but that she finds it odd that she uses the hashtag in public.

“It’s the nickname that’s strange – I wouldn’t want to associate my beautiful little girl with Gary Busey…”

And the people in the comments largely agreed that the friend was acting strange — not because she was using the name, but also because she was using the nickname.

“That friend is really strange for using it,” someone wrote.

“It’s fine to use Lucy, maybe a warning would have been nice, but it’s very strange to use the same nickname, considering it’s Gary Blucy.”

Are Unique Baby Names Worth It?

You may think that a unique name will make you stand out, but is it really?

Josie Griffiths, deputy editor of Fabulous, talks about the problems she had with her name as a child.

As a child, I wanted nothing more than a personalized keychain with my name on it.

But it wasn’t. The closest I could get were Rosie, Joseph (not so nice for such a little girl) and Joanne.

Josie is short for Josephine, a French first name, and I’ve been in my twenties without ever meeting anyone with the same first name.

When I try to introduce myself to people I get called all sorts of random names like Tracey and Stacey and it can be quite annoying.

Although I’ve met a few Josies in the past year (there are a few around my age), it’s still a much rarer name than most of my friends’ names.

Overall I don’t mind it, at least it’s not crude or spelled weird.

And that means I can get away with ‘doing a Cheryl’ and just calling myself Josie.

I’m getting married this year and some friends are shocked that I’m changing my last name. It’s not considered cool or feminist these days. I explain to them that I’m not that attached to Griffiths because I always just say ‘Hi, I’m Josie’ when I call a friend.

I like being unique and I will definitely try to achieve this when naming my own children.

You have to watch out for the crude names, so after nine years as a lifestyle journalist I will definitely avoid them.

“Given the additional information that she’s using your nickname, it’s definitely intentional and pretty weird,” added another.

“I get it. I find it weird,” said a third.

“When I was pregnant with one of my children, I told my mother that I wanted to name the baby something very specific and that would connect with my husband’s culture. So she took in (literally captured) a stray cat and gave him that name.

“It was so bizarre and it still bothers me.”
