The United States Agency for International Development was ordered to close on Friday in the midst of Elon Musk's efforts to dismantle it and call it a 'criminal organization'.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is now working diligently to recall thousands of employees around the world, told two sources that are familiar with the discussions to Reuters.
The employees were told by Peter Marocco, who was appointed by President Donald Trump, that all USAID – employees and their families should be returned to the United States by Friday – although that deadline could be delayed.
USAID employees in many agencies at the headquarters of the Bureau in Washington DC also received a memo that they are placed on administrative leave, according to PBS newshour correspondent Lisa Desjardins.
It said that they must be available to report to the work 'if aimed to do this' and must be available by telephone and e -mail during normal office hours.
But they are 'not to enter USAID buildings, to access USAID systems or try to use your position or authority in any way without my prior consent or prior permission from a supervisor in your command structure, “wrote Marocco, the Newly appointed deputy manager for the agency.
Two employees who have been placed on administrative leave said that every desk agency is instructed to leave a 'skeleton team' to help identify programs to be closed.
Department of Government Efficiency Head Elon Musk dismantled the United States Agency for International Development
All overseas missions for the United States Agency for International Development were closed on Tuesday by the US Department of Foreign Affairs
The move comes when President Donald Trump's government is planning to merge USAID – the primary humanitarian agency of Washington that spreads billions of dollars abroad – with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The president had previously ordered a freezing of most foreign help on his first day at the office and said he wanted to make sure it was in accordance with his first platform in America.
Dozens of USAID employees were then set on leave last week under the orders from Stop-Work, while hundreds of internal contractors were dismissed.
By Monday, State Secretary Marco Rubio announced that he took over as acting heads of the desk – of which he said it “did not respond completely” because he accused employees of being not prepared to answer simple questions about his programs.
He also informed the congress in a letter about the pending reorganization of the agency and said that some parts of USAID can be absorbed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while others will be completely abolished.
The agency employed more than 10,000 people, of which about two -thirds served abroad, according to a report from the Congressional Research Service.
This is a crushing new story and will be updated.
