NEW DELHI: A local court in Kolkata on Sunday remanded the former director of RG Kar Hospital in judicial custody Sandip Ghosh and the Tala police officer in charge, Abhijit Mondal, CBI custody until September 17th.
The central agency had charged both individuals in court in connection with the rape and murder from a doctor at the state hospital.
“We have remanded them for three days till September 17. Now they are being interrogated together. The duo has played an important role in the RG Kar case,” a CBI official informed PTI.

The CBI on Saturday arrested Ghosh and Mondal for their alleged involvement in destruction of evidence in the Kolkata rape and murder case. The development came soon after protesting doctors returned from a meeting with CM Mamata Banerjee without reaching a resolution, prolonging the standoff.
The Calcutta High Court had ordered a CBI probe into the rape and murder of a young doctor on hospital premises. The court has set a deadline of September 17 for the CBI to submit a progress report in the case.
During interrogation by CBI officers on Saturday, Mondal failed to give satisfactory answers, leading to his arrest. The CBI had alleged in court that there could be a larger conspiracy going on and that both Ghosh and Mondal had played a crucial role in the crime. The two were in communication with each other and Ghosh allegedly instructed Mondal on how to proceed with the rape-murder case.
Despite being informed about the doctor’s death around 10 am on August 9, the FIR was filed only around 11 pm. The CBI accused both the persons of trying to trivialise the incident and cover up the heinous crime. The central probe agency argued that the police should have treated the case as a suo motu case from the beginning, considering the nature of the crime.
Ghosh was earlier arrested by the CBI in a separate probe into financial irregularities and is currently in custody till September 23.

Ghosh is being held in solitary confinement at the Presidency Central Jail following a special court order to remand him till September for alleged financial misconduct at the RG Kar Hospital. The CBI alleges that Ghosh embezzled funds and made 84 illegal appointments between 2022 and 2023.
So far, three people have been arrested in connection with the rape-murder case. The body of the postgraduate trainee was discovered on August 9 in the seminar hall of the state hospital.
