Career Advice from Karren Brady on Transitioning to Your Dream Job
APPRENTICE star and West Ham United Vice Chairman Karren Brady answers all your career questions.
Here she gives advice to a reader who wants to make the transition from her job in the hospitality industry to a dream job in a creative industry.
Q) I have a zero-hours contract as a waitress. It used to work fine for me because I could also have my part-time job as a playwright. But at the moment I don’t really make any money from it.
I don’t get much satisfaction from my work in hospitality (apart from the tips I get at the end of the shift!) and my dream is to do something creative. However, I know how competitive it is to work in the creative sector, especially if you have no experience.
How can I make the transition from serving drinks to my dream job?

A) Since writing is your passion, you may consider looking for opportunities in the creative sector, such as theatre, publishing or media.
Even though it may seem difficult to get started in these fields, there are ways to gain experience.
For example, you can work as a production assistant, editorial assistant or social media coordinator. This will give you insight into a specific sector and help you develop skills.
Starting with an entry-level job can provide you with valuable learning experiences and help you build a network with professionals who share your interests.
Surround yourself with creative people for inspiration and the chance to be aware of opportunities. Consider attending events and workshops or joining local theater groups or writing clubs.
Don’t be discouraged by the competitive nature of the industry: many successful people in theatre, publishing and media have faced challenges on their path to success.
Your talent, dedication and strong work ethic are powerful assets, so be sure to be positive and proactive.
