‘U-turn in government’: Congress hits out at Modi 3.0 as it marks completion of 100 days | India News – Times of India
NEW DELHI: The Congress on Monday raised the stakes against the Modi3.0 government as it marks the completion of its first 100 days, alleging that the opposition forced the Centre to take ‘U-turns’ in several of its flagship programmes and initiatives such as lateral entry, OPS And Waqf Board Bill.
Addressing a press conference, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said the “arrogance” of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government will not work anymore and there will have to be a U-turn if the wrong decisions are having an impact on the people.
“The first part of the report discusses the U-turn government of Narendra Modi. The U-turn in government has been in effect for the past 100 days, and it is the democracy of this country, the opposition and the people who have forced this turnaround,” Shrinate said.
“Arrogance will no longer work, and the government will have to make U-turns. If any of your wrong decisions affect the people of the country, that law will not be made, and we will ensure that U-turns are made continuously,” she added.
Shrinate also mentioned the Waqf Bill that was sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) due to pressure from the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) parties.
“Lateral entry, which ignored reservations and was implemented later, was met with resistance and anger from the people, which led to a U-turn. They claimed that they would introduce a bill to silence independent journalists who ask difficult questions and hold up a mirror. The opposition was so strong that they had to do a U-turn on that bill too. They said they would introduce a governance bill, which was nothing more than a means of polarization and appeasement. The reality is that the entire opposition and the people of this country forced you to send it to the JPC,” she said.
“This is the first bill sent to the JPC after 2019. You tried to impose indexation on the middle class and introduce LTCG tax, but in the face of the anger of the middle class and the initiative of the opposition, you had to withdraw indexation. You made grand claims that NPS is very good, OPS is bad and there is nothing better than NPS, but you had to bring back OPS as well. So why shouldn’t I say that these 100 days are symbolic of continued U-turns?” she added.
The BJP-led NDA government completed its 100 days of assuming power for the third time in a row. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the NDA won 294 seats and the opposition INDIA bloc made huge gains, winning 233 seats.
