Nothing sets September 24 launch date for ‘open’ wireless headset

There are no new product launches planned for later this month, the company announced on Tuesday. In recent weeks, the company has been teasing the arrival of a new product without actually revealing any relevant information, such as what kind of device will be launched or any specifications. The latest teaser posted by the company suggests that the British startup led by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei will soon introduce a new wireless audio headset with an open-ear design.

On Tuesday, Nothing’s account on X (formerly Twitter) posted a short clip of two circular cables crashing into each other. The post also included the text “out in the open” along with confirmation that the company will launch a new product on September 24. There is no additional information, not even on the company’s website.

The curved components mentioned in the post on X appear to be part of an open-ear headset, similar to the earloop seen on the Soundcore AeroFit Pro or Shokz OpenFit Air. However, this speculation should be taken with a grain of salt, as the company has no plans to launch a new pair of earbuds. A listing on the IMDA website suggests that the company could launch a product called the Nothing Ear Open soon.

Open-ear wireless earbuds are designed to stay further away from your ear canal, allowing you to listen to media while remaining aware of your surroundings and reducing ear fatigue. However, they lack the passive seal that traditional in-ear headsets offer, leading to sound leakage.

There is no product that does not offer true wireless stereo earphones with an open-ear design. The latest announcement from the company contains two clues: the word “open” itself and the part of the product shown in the short video. These clues hint at whether the upcoming product will be the first product in the open-ear category.

The only other TWS headset the company has released without silicone tips is the now-discontinued Nothing Ear Stick (review). However, that headset featured an in-ear design, while rumors have it that the Nothing headset could be the company’s first open-ear earphones.
