However, after placing a click Commenting on her dress choice on Reddit, social media users described the dress as “too short” and “too revealing.”

Post to the community thread r/Weddingattireapproval Under the username @soft_Leadership_5768, the wedding guest shared a photo of her black corset style small dress, leaving many with open mouths.

She captioned the post ‘Too short? Too casual?’ with a photo of herself in a fitting room.

She explained: ‘I went to my cousin’s wedding and all the invitation said was that it would be semi-formal, no jeans and no white.

“I’ve never been to a wedding as an adult, so I have no idea what semi-formal is.

“I’ve lost a lot of weight in the past year and I’m finally comfortable in shorter dresses, so I wanted to wear something I normally wouldn’t wear, but now I’m having second thoughts.”

The young woman posed in a dress with a plunging neckline, a bow detail and a puff skirt, which she teamed with a pair of high, strappy platform-style heels.

She added: “The wedding is in a week, but I have a spare dress in case I need it.

“I honestly don’t think anyone in my family would say anything about it as I’m the youngest and only girl on this side of the family so I can get away with pretty much anything.

“But I wanted to hear other people’s opinions, just to be sure.”

REDDIT USERS RESPOND

However, Reddit users were stunned by the woman’s dress at her wedding and took to the comments to share their thoughts.

While many felt it looked more like a ‘fantasy costume’, others felt it was inappropriate and more suited for a ‘night out with friends’.

I don’t think this is suitable for a wedding

Someone said, “This looks like a French maid role play costume. It’s too short. But you look great in this costume.”

Another added: ‘The first one looks great on you but is very costumey and looks like a maid outfit.’

Wedding Guest Etiquette

If you’re having trouble choosing a dress for wedding season, here are a few rules about what not to wear so you don’t get into trouble.

  • According to tradition, wearing red to a wedding means you have slept with the groom.
  • Informal clothing such as jeans and flip-flops should always be avoided.
  • Any color that can be recognized as white or cream, even if it is not.
  • Most will agree that your décolletage should be covered.
  • Wearing white is absolutely taboo if you are not the bride.

“Backup is a little disappointing, but it’s a great blank page to fill with jewelry, makeup, hairstyles, etc.”

A third commented: “This doesn’t seem appropriate to me.”

Do’s and Don’ts of Wedding Dress Codes

By Josie Griffiths, fabulous deputy editor and bride-to-be.

Josie Griffiths said: I will never forget the wedding I went to in October 2022 where one guest wore a white dress.

The dress didn’t fit properly, it reached the knee and didn’t look like a real wedding dress at all, but that didn’t stop everyone from judging her.

The rules for wedding guest outfits – which, unfortunately, are much stricter for women than for men – are supposed to be about “not overshadowing the bride,” which is actually quite difficult to do at someone else’s wedding.

But if you do it wrong as a guest, you’ll come across as a bit ridiculous, and to a lot of people who don’t know you personally.

It’s just not the right occasion for your new white dress, no matter how much online retailers like to dump them in the “wedding guest” category.

I would avoid anything too tight/short and avoid very formal dresses unless the dress code dictates it. You don’t want to be wearing a long sequined dress to a smart casual event.

Personally, I don’t like black dresses either, it’s not a funeral.

Otherwise, you should be pretty safe. Technically, wearing red means you’re in love with the groom, but that’s the kind of rule most people would laugh at these days.

I always check what colour the bridesmaids are wearing, just to be sure. After the Spanish wedding I saw them walking down the aisle in the exact same dress that I had in my Asos shopping bag a few weeks earlier.

If you are in doubt, it is best to ask the bride. But if you are already in doubt about your dress, that may be all the answer you need.

Someone else agreed: “I don’t think this is appropriate for a wedding. It’s super cute!

“But definitely a night out with friends or a date night outfit and not a wedding dress.”

Meanwhile, another user joined the conversation: “I wouldn’t wear this to a wedding.

“It’s too revealing in my opinion, it looks like something you would wear when going out with friends.”
