Alibaba Releases New Open-Source Models and Text-to-Video AI Technology
Chinese technology company Alibaba on Thursday released new open-source artificial intelligence (AI) models and text-to-video AI technology, bolstering its efforts to compete in the fast-growing field of generative AI.
The more than 100 open-source models come from Alibaba’s Qwen 2.5 family, the latest fundamental major language model released in May.
Chinese tech companies, like their American counterparts, are investing heavily in generative AI, seeking to develop robust product portfolios and diversified offerings.
While competitors such as Baidu and OpenAI primarily adopt closed-source approaches, Alibaba has embraced a hybrid model, investing in both proprietary and open-source development to broaden its AI product offerings.
The new models range in size from 0.5 to 72 billion parameters — the variables that determine an AI model’s capacity and performance — and offer capabilities in mathematics, coding and support for more than 29 languages, Alibaba said in a statement.
The models are intended for a wide range of AI applications across industries, including automotive, gaming and scientific research.
Alibaba also unveiled a new text-to-video model on Thursday as part of its Tongyi Wanxiang family of image generation products, joining a growing number of Chinese tech companies entering the emerging market.
The move puts Alibaba in direct competition with global players such as OpenAI, which has also shown interest in text-to-video technology.
In August, ByteDance, which owns TikTok, launched its text-to-video app Jimeng AI on Apple’s App Store for Chinese users.
