Sometimes mold can form if you turn up the heating in the bathroom.

To completely prevent this, there is an optimum temperature you can stick to, which is probably warmer than you think.

“Mold thrives in damp environments,” explains interior design expert Henry Maia.

“By maintaining a consistent and appropriate temperature, homeowners can make life difficult for mold spores and thus protect their health and the quality of their home.”

The ideal temperature is between 20°C and 22°C (68°F and 72°F).

“Keeping the temperature in your bathroom within this range will reduce the chance of mold growth,” he continues.

It’s also important to make sure your bathroom is well ventilated, although it’s not always a good idea to open the window.

“Rather than just opening the window all the way for a while, it’s better to ventilate more subtly with small air vents or leaving a window slightly open for a few hours — perhaps during the day when the bathroom is less used,” said Henry, the vice president of Mineral tilessaid.

Other tips from Henry include sealing all cracks and holes around bathtubs, sinks and windows, and repairing them to keep “cold air out and heat in.”

If it is very cold in your bathroom, you may want to consider purchasing a radiant heater.

“Just make sure it’s away from water sources and has safety features,” Henry advised.

A towel warmer is also a way to keep it nice and warm. It increases the temperature and reduces the chance of moisture build-up.

And if you’re concerned about indoor humidity, you can keep an eye on it with a hygrometer.

“Try to keep humidity below 50 percent to reduce the risk of mold,” he said.

What is mold and how do you get rid of it?

During the winter months there is a greater chance of mold developing.

Olivia Young, Product Development Scientist at To amaze revealed exactly why this is the case.

“Unfortunately, mold is a common problem that many people face during the winter. Mold thrives in warm, humid conditions, so your bathrooms are likely to be the most affected area.

“That being said, during the colder months, most rooms in your home can be susceptible to mold growth.

“This is mainly caused by condensation that forms on your windows when you turn on the radiators.

“If you think about it, when windows and doors are closed, the air can’t circulate properly and the moisture can’t escape quickly.

“This build-up can cause the dreaded mold to grow, especially in bathrooms, as it creates a warm, moist environment that is a breeding ground for mold.

“If left untreated, it is not only unsightly, but can also pose a serious health risk. That is why it is very important to treat it.

“The key to dealing with mold is to act quickly.

“Try to avoid contact with it as much as possible. So grab your gloves, tie your hair up and get to work removing all signs of mold as soon as you notice them.

To prevent mold, there are a number of simple solutions that you can implement throughout your home.

“The first is to ventilate it. Yes, even in the cold winter months try to leave your bathroom window open for at least 10/15 minutes after showering or bathing. This will quickly remove excess moisture and prevent mold from forming.

“If you have recurring mold in a particular area, it may be because the humidity is too high. You can purchase a dehumidifier that will help keep the humidity down and reduce the risk of mold recurring.

“The golden rule to remember when dealing with mold is: the sooner you can treat it, the better. If you leave it alone, it will only get worse, so never ignore it!

“To successfully remove mold every time, I recommend opting for the The UK’s No. 1 Mould & Mildew Removerthat removes mold and mildew stains almost instantly, without the need for scrubbing.”

Henry concluded, “Protecting your home from mold isn’t just about aesthetics, although that’s important; it’s about the health and safety of your family.

“By taking proactive steps to manage temperature and humidity, homeowners can maintain a clean and comfortable living environment during the winter months.”
