Meta AI can now ‘imagine’ you in different avatars

Meta AI features were a major highlight of the company’s annual Meta Connect event on Wednesday, with the company introducing a new voice chat feature and adding new artificial intelligence capabilities to its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. The social media giant also expanded its experimental ‘Imagine’ feature to Facebook, Instagram and Messenger. The feature was unveiled earlier this year, allowing users to recreate their profile photo in different AI-generated styles. It’s now rolling out to all users. Additionally, Meta is also testing a feature that automatically generates images and recommends them for users to share to their feed.

In a newsroom afterThe social media giant shared details about how the feature would work. So far, users can use Meta AI to generate images from text prompts. Users can also share an image as input and ask the AI to generate images based on it. However, the company did not let users use their profile picture images to generate images.

That changes now, as during Meta Connect 2024 the company announced that the ‘Imagine’ feature will be available to all Facebook and Instagram users. The feature will allow users to create both posts and Stories.

Simply put, users can now ask Meta AI to ‘Imagine’ them as a superhero, a royal monarch or an astronaut, and the AI will do just that. Based on the images shared by the company, it seems that the AI-generated images will not be very realistic and will instead appear to be digitally created. Meta will also add AI-generated watermarks to these images.

In Instagram DM and Messenger, users can now use AI to generate personalized chat themes. Users could previously change the background color and chat bubble, but this offers a higher level of personalization.

In addition, Meta is also testing a recommendation feature with the Imagine feature. The company plans to show automatically generated AI images of the user’s profile picture in the Instagram and Facebook feed. The generated images are based on the user’s interests or current trends. If the user likes the image, they can share it to their feed or Stories. They can also tap on the image to make changes to the suggested image.
