Snapchat now lets you track all the places you’ve explored
Snapchat has started rolling out a new feature for iOS users that will let them keep track of all the places they’ve explored and sent photos of. The feature, called Footsteps, only works if Ghost Mode is not enabled on Snapchat for iPhone. In addition to counting new places the user travels to, it can also use stored memories to take previous trips into account. Notably, the instant messaging platform announced several major updates at last week’s Snap Partner Summit 2024, including the integration of the Gemini Large Language Model (LLM) into My AI and the fifth generation of Snap Spectacles.
According to Snapchat, iOS users can use Footsteps to track all the places they’ve used Snap Map. If you’re using the feature for the first time, the platform uses Reminders to complete the first few steps. However, on subsequent uses, the location data will be used to track the steps.
The Footsteps feature was previously only available to Snapchat+ subscribers, but has now been rolled out widely to all iOS users. This information is private and only accessible to the account holder. Snapchat says Footsteps only works when Ghost Mode – a feature that hides the location from others on the map – is turned off.
Users can also choose to delete their Footsteps history if they no longer wish to use this feature. Gadgets 360 employees were able to verify the feature’s availability after updating Snapchat for iOS to version 13.9.0.40.
Other Snapchat Features
At Snap Summit 2024, the instant messaging platform announced a partnership with Google to integrate Gemini LLM into My AI – the AI chatbot. In addition to computer vision capabilities, it also gets improved text, audio, image, video and code processing capabilities.
It also debuted the Snap AI Video feature that can generate AI videos based on text prompts, although this is only available to creators on the platform. Another addition is a new AI lens that allows users to appear as their older selves. Snapchat has also brought AI lenses and captioning features to Snapchat Memories.
