This is how you baby-proof your house

If you have a baby on the way soon, here are our top tips for getting your home ready for its arrival…

Secure furniture and appliances: Use brackets or straps to anchor heavy furniture and TVs to the wall. Make sure large appliances such as refrigerators and ovens are stable and cannot fall over.

Install safety gates: Install gates at the top and bottom of the stairs. Use gates to close off rooms that are not baby-proof.

Cover electrical outlets: Use outlet covers or plates to prevent little fingers from sticking into the outlets. Make sure electrical cords are out of reach or secured.

Lock cabinets and drawers: Install child-resistant locks on cabinets and drawers, especially in the kitchen and bathroom. Keep hazardous substances, sharp objects and small objects that could be swallowed out of reach.

Use corner and edge protectors: Install soft corner and edge protectors on furniture with sharp edges. Consider using them on low tables, countertops and fireplaces.

Secured windows and doors: Install window protectors or locks to prevent windows from opening more than a few inches. Use doorknob covers and doorstops to prevent pinched fingers.

Provide a safe sleeping environment: Use a firm mattress and do not place pillows, blankets or cuddly toys in the crib. Make sure the cot meets current safety standards.

Keep small objects out of reach: Check the floor regularly for small objects that could pose a choking hazard. Be aware of items such as coins, buttons and small toys.

Adjust the water heater temperature: Set your water heater to a maximum of 49°C (120°F) to avoid scalding. Always test the temperature of the bath water before putting your baby in it.

Use baby monitors: Place baby monitors in the nursery to keep an eye on your little one. Make sure monitor cords are out of reach to avoid strangulation hazards.

By taking these steps you can create a safer environment for your baby.

A third commented: “What a beautiful, relaxing space. Perfect for new bubba cuddles.”

While someone else posted: “Love the classic look.”

To this, Megan replied, “Me too.”

However, many parents were keen to warn Megan about a potential danger in the nursery.

One woman explained: “Looks lovely but wouldn’t hang a picture on the wall above my bed, let alone a baby.”

A second chimed in: ‘The window frames above the crib are giving me anxiety.’

Meanwhile, another partner wrote: “Personally I wouldn’t hang pictures etc above the crib. I would be afraid they would fall off the wall.”
