With my £1.65 Asda tip you’ll never have to clean your toilet again: stop the build-up
A GROTTY bathroom can be avoided with a cleaning enthusiast’s must-try tip to prevent stubborn limescale stains.
Jen Needham, also known as the ‘Cleaning Fairy Godmother’, uses a budget-friendly purchase to reduce build-up in her toilet.
Jen has collected over 185,000 Instagram followers of sharing her hacks for a pristine home.
From white vinegar and baking soda to bleach, everyone has their go-to method for keeping toilets sparkling.
However, Jen revealed that the best-kept secret delivers impressive results with minimal effort and no harsh odor.
She takes two steps to remove stubborn grime before using a cleaning product to maintain results.
“Remove the water from the bottom of the toilet by pushing it out with a toilet brush,” she said The Express.
“Then carefully go over the stains with a pumice stone and it will come through perfectly.”
Jen said a budget purchase from Asda is essential for a long-lasting finish.
“A great product to use daily after tackling limescale is Harpic black toilet gel,” she said.
“Using it daily can help keep buildup under control.”
Pumice stone is available from Superdrug for £2, while Harpic Power Plus Toilet Cleaner Gel costs £1.65 from Asda.
According to Harpic, the gel is “10x better than bleach” at removing stains, freshening and banishing germs.
Shoppers have given it a near-perfect 5-star rating and written rave reviews.
“This product works great, so quick and easy and it works well. It doesn’t need to be left on for long before it works and no scrubbing is required afterwards,” said one customer.
“This is a fantastic toilet cleaner, it really removes the tough stains,” wrote another.
“There’s a bit of it involved. The scent is not too strong, which is good. Nice packaging.”
The dirtiest things in your house that you probably forget to clean
Research shows that people are exposed to an average of 60,000 types of germs every day.
Olivia Young, cleaning expert and product development scientist at Astonish, reveals the dirtiest things in your home and how to clean them.
Kitchen sponges or cloths
Some of the items we use to clean surfaces are actually the dirtiest. From wiping countertops to cleaning dishes, kitchen sponges or clothes are used several times a day. And when you do, it’s usually wet and warm, which means if it’s not cleaned properly, it can be an excellent place for bacteria to grow.
As a general rule of thumb, once you’ve used your sponge for about two weeks, it’s time to replace it.
Shoes
Shoes are without a doubt an item in the home that is full of bacteria. Research shows that a single shoe sole contains an average of 421,000 bacteria, but there is no reason to panic.
Most of these germs that collect on shoes don’t come into contact with other parts of your home, assuming you take them off when you come in or put them in a box in your wardrobe.
Pet bowls and toys
Pet bowls have been found to be the third most contaminated item in households, meaning they are a breeding ground for germs and bacteria that can make you and your pet unwell.
Give them a wash with warm soapy water after each use to keep bacteria at bay. If the toy is plastic, you can soak it in warm water with disinfectant or soap. Soft toys can be thoroughly cleaned in a washing machine on a gentle cycle.
Toothbrush holder
Your toothbrush holder is probably not something you consider dirty, but there are more germs in the holder that holds your toothbrush than in your sink faucets.
Clean your toothbrush holder at least once or twice a week.
A third customer raved that the gel didn’t have an overpowering scent.
“I usually use bleach to remove stubborn stains from the toilet, but I don’t like the smell,” they said.
“This one was very easy to use and the bottle makes it easy to handle and use, even with just one hand. The smell is much better than bleach.
“I left it for just ten minutes, brushed a little, but not too hard, and flushed the toilet. It removed almost all stains effectively.
“I was impressed with how quickly it worked. You only need a small amount and it removes tough and stubborn stains quickly and efficiently.”
