AN INTERIOR expert has revealed the four mistakes people always make when decorating their home.

But she often finds that people clutter their storage space or take up too much floor space.

And these mistakes can make rooms look even smaller.

Speak with Barratt LondonLaura – from Edinburgh – said: “Many people forget to use vertical space, such as walls and high shelves.

“They missed opportunities in terms of additional storage and organization.

“Cramming too much into cupboards, cupboards and drawers can also be a common pitfall [and] can make it difficult to find items and cause items to burst out of the closet.

“It’s important to leave some breathing room in storage areas to keep them functional.”

Laura also revealed that disorganized storage and not taking the time to plan interior design projects can lead to space issues in your home.

She said: “Without the right organizational systems, even the best storage solutions can become chaotic.

“Using labeled bins and baskets helps keep everything in its place and makes items easy to find.

“Starting space-saving projects without a clear plan can also lead to inefficient use of space and resources.

“Taking the time to measure, plan and visualize the layout can result in a more effective and aesthetically pleasing outcome.”

To get the most out of your rooms, the IKEA expert advises people to follow her vertical rules.

Firstly, Laura says that the way you present your storage space is crucial to maximizing your space.

“Floating shelves and hooks can be both functional and visually appealing,” she revealed.

“Vertical storage solutions take advantage of otherwise wasted wall space and display items that reflect your personality. This also helps to clear floor space and prevent the room from feeling cluttered.

“Suction shelves and hooks are a great renter-friendly option for bathroom storage.”

And color can also have a huge impact when you think about the vertical space in your home, creating the illusion of a larger room.

Laura says: “Using color and lighting effectively can significantly improve the perception of space in a small home.

“Light colors, such as white, pastels and soft neutrals, reflect light and make a room feel larger and more open, while dark colors can be used to create a moody, cozy atmosphere.

“Color placement is also important. Using color to emphasize vertical space draws the eye upward and creates the illusion of height.”

Finally, if you have a small bathroom or balcony space, greenery is very important when considering vertical space.

“Hanging baskets, green walls and hanging plants provide visual interest without taking up valuable floor space,” says Laura.

“Similarly, outdoor shelves are not just for storing forgotten plant pots. They can be used to display your plants and store items in an artistic and inspiring way, just like open shelving indoors.”
