He took to Reddit anonymously and revealed that he and his stepsister, who met when they were 10, had been dating for two and a half years.

“We don’t actively hide it like it’s something to be ashamed of, but we don’t bring it up either,” he added.

“Our parents didn’t know for a while, we just never got around to telling them to avoid it being awkward.

“But a month ago they finally found out and got P***ED.

“We have done our best to be calm and understanding, and have assured them that we have done nothing irresponsible and that our relationship is completely healthy.”

“However, they were having none of it, and continued to rage at us, claiming our relationship was everything from incestuous to irresponsible to destructive, etc.”

Ever since their parents found out, their relationship with them has been strained.

He revealed that they both started dating when they were both over 18, adding, “we are best friends who genuinely love each other.”

The couple had tried to reassure their parents, but it was having none of it, he admitted.

He continued: “We’ve talked to some of our friends about it and they said that while they don’t think our relationship is a problem, it’s unreasonable for us to think that things could ever work out for our parents.

I had a wild ’emotional affair’ with a married man – I desperately wanted him, but it ended up VERY messy

Now the couple wondered if they were wrong for expecting their parents to accept their relationship as they were both happy together and had no intention of breaking up.

People were quick to respond to the comments Reddit post and share their thoughts on the unique dynamic.

One person wrote: “I think NAH, but super creepy and gross. Spending about half your childhood as siblings and then deciding to have a sexual relationship is…abnormal.”

Another commented: “No, but still gross and gross so prepare for a lot of judgement.”

Is it legal to marry a step-sibling?

Although there may be no blood relationship between step-siblings, there are still problems they may encounter when they fall in love.

In Britain, it is legal to marry a step-sibling, provided neither of you is already married or in a civil partnership with anyone else.

However, there are certain conditions that must be met. For example, if you grew up together as siblings from a very young age, this may raise questions about blood or family relationships, which can complicate matters.

It is always advisable to seek legal advice to fully understand all implications before proceeding.

“You have the right to date whoever you want, but I can sympathize with any parent who thinks this is weird. Hopefully your parents will be more understanding,” a third wrote.

Meanwhile, a fourth said: “You’re not family so it’s no different to dating someone you’ve been friends with since you were that age.”

“NAH but this is actually gross. You guys grew up together as siblings, related or not. I’m not related to my stepdad but he’s still my damn dad,” a fifth claimed.

Someone else added: “It’s a bit weird but you guys aren’t really related.
