NEW DELHI: Former Chief Scientist from the World Health Organization (WHO) Soumya Swaminathan has been appointed director counselor with the union Ministry of Health for the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme on a free base.
The government said in a statement on Tuesday that Swaminathan will provide technical advice on the overall strategy to achieve the programme’s objectives, suggest policy directions and necessary course corrections for optimum results, and advise on the research strategy.
She will also help form expert groups with top talents from around the world and support the Ministry of Health, state officials and development partners in assessing the impact of the program, the government statement said.
Swaminathan was the former chief scientist of the World Health Organization and also served as Director-General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) earlier.
