Carjacking in Melbourne CBD: Man fights for his life after being run over by his own 4WD, breaks silence

A carjacking victim says doctors told him it was a “miracle” he survived when he was run over by his car as he desperately tried to prevent the robbery.

Jinwoo Song, 30, and his partner BiBi Kim left their Ford Escape running as they unloaded groceries at their new apartment on Hardware Street in Melbourne’s CBD last Thursday.

An opportunistic thief on a scooter jumped into the car and tried to drive away, but Mr. Song bravely clung to the front of the car to prevent him from fleeing, only to be pinned under the wheels of the SUV.

This terrifying event was captured on camera.

Mr Song was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he spent the first night in a critical condition.

He spent four nights in hospital recovering from a broken sternum, and his entire body was covered in bruises.

Five days after the ordeal, Mr. Song considers himself lucky, despite the physical and mental scars he still bears.

“The doctor in the hospital said, ‘It’s a miracle. You’re very lucky, but also unlucky,'” Mr. Song said Nine news on Tuesday.

‘The band had gone over my head, and arms, and my chest here. Because I was being rolled I thought, “I’m going to die, I’m going to die.”‘

Mr Song said he owed his life to two doctors who witnessed the incident and came to his aid.

“He (one of the doctors) said, ‘You are in a very serious situation, but you can do it. Just don’t move and keep talking,’” Mr. Song recalled.

Since being released from the hospital, he can thank the doctors for saving his life.

His partner is still traumatized by what she saw.

“I can still remember that moment when he got out of the car very often,” said Kim.

Mr Song faces a long recovery, but he is grateful for what he sees as “a second life”.

‘I’m going to try to live this second life meaningfully.’

Police are still looking for the man who fled in his car.
